1. Election Commission Relaxes Poll Code For Maharashtra To Begin Drought Relief

The Election Commission of India (EC) has relaxed the model code of conduct in Maharashtra, allowing the government to take up relief work in areas reeling under drought across large parts of the state. “The commission has no objections to the proposal, in view of public interest involved,” EC said in a communication to the state election commission on Sunday.

Elections in all 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra were completed on April 29, after which chief minister Devendra Fadnavis wrote to the EC asking if the election code could be relaxed.

2. Lok Sabha Elections 2019- Don’t Fight, Prepare For Assembly Polls: Milind Deora

Addressing a review meeting of office-bearers of the Mumbai Congress after the Lok Sabha elections, city unit chief Milind Deora on Monday said he would not tolerate factionalism and hoped for discipline within its ranks.

He also asked party leaders to gear up for the Assembly elections and said the party would prepare a detailed vision document for the city. “The party will engage with developmental economists, social scientists and citizens in a big way to roll out a plan that helps Mumbai achieve its deserving place on the world map,” read a statement from the Mumbai Congress.

3. Mumbai Coastal Road Project: 95 Hectares Reclamation, Says BMC, After Activists Cry Foul

After city residents and activists alleged that only 10 hectares of green space would be available out of a total reclamation of 90 hectares for the Mumbai Coastal Road project, the BMC has come up with a fresh number of 95 hectares reclamation for the project and maintained that open space will be about 70 hectares.

However, the extra five hectares suddenly added by the BMC has not convinced activists, who point out that all official documents of the civic body show 90 hectares reclamation.

4. SpiceJet Launches 12 Flights From T2 In Slots Left Vacant By Jet

After Indigo, GoAir and Air Asia, now SpiceJet has launched 12 flights from Terminal 2 at the Mumbai airport. While none of the low-cost carriers wanted to operate from T2 due to high costs, they have been left with no choice because of Jet Airways vacating slots.

Like Air Asia and Vistara, SpiceJet over the weekend added capacity on some routes which were operated by Jet and started using the temporary slots to pursue their expansion.

5. Bombay High Court Holds Marriage Of 52-Year-Old With Minor As Valid

In the case of a lawyer, then 52 years old, who had married a 14-year-old girl in 2015, the Bombay High Court has ruled that if the girl, who is now a legal adult, is ready to cohabit with the man as his wife, “the marriage which otherwise is voidable, becomes valid”.

The girl had on February 13, 2017, registered a police complaint alleging rape, sexual assault and violation of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The accused, who is now 56, was in jail for 10 months after police filed an FIR.
