1. Not The BEST Of Both Worlds: Bus Passengers Rise, But Earnings Dip
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) on Tuesday, the first day of the implementation of the fare cut, got five lakh more passengers than the previous day, but its earnings dipped considerably.
The fares have been reduced to ₹5-20 for regular and ₹6-25 for AC buses. BEST saw 22.18 lakh passengers on Tuesday, compared to 17.15 lakh the previous day – a rise of 29%.

2. MLA Nitesh Rane, 18 Others Get Bail In Assault Case
A local court in Sindhudurg on Wednesday granted bail to former chief minister Narayan Rane’s son, Nitesh, a sitting legislator, and 18 others, who are facing charges for assaulting an engineer of the National Highways Authority of India.
They were granted bail against a surety of Rs 20,000 each

3. Medical Students Challenge Constitutional Validity Of Amendments To SEBC Act In HC
A group of aspiring medical students have approached the Bombay High Court challenging the constitutional validity of a new amendment to the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act providing reservation to the Maratha community in admissions to MBBS courses.
A division bench of Justice S C Dharmadhikari and Justice Gautam Patel on Wednesday heard arguments of senior counsel M M Vashi for the petitioner and adjourned the case till Thursday.

4. Bombay HC Asks Civil Aviation Ministry To Ensure Passengers’ Safety
The Bombay high court (HC) on Wednesday directed the Union civil aviation ministry to disclose steps it will take to ensure passenger safety and convenience, after the city airport’s main runway had to be shut for 72 hours to clear a SpiceJet aircraft that had overshot it on July 1.
The court noted that it had taken around three days to remove the SpiceJet aircraft as the only Disabled Aircraft Retrieval Kit (DARK) required for the operation was in Mangaluru to clear an Air India Express plane, which had also overshot the runway.

5. Dengue Toll Rises To Three; 1,059 Cases So Far
With the death of a 13-year-old girl in Thane on July 5, three persons have died of dengue in Maharashtra this year. Two other deaths were reported in Kolhapur before the onset of monsoon. So far, at least 1,059 cases of dengue have been recorded across the state.
Shreya Vinod Yadav suffered dengue haemorrhagic shock syndrome a day after she was admitted to Jupiter hospital in Thane. Civic officials said she suffered multiple organ failure, which arises as a complication of the viral infection.
