‘Barrack 12 of Arthur Road Jail Safe for Vijay Mallya’

Ordering extradition of Vijay Mallya on Monday, the UK court quoted the Indian government’s letter about high-level security at Barrack No 12 of Arthur Road Jail where the erstwhile liquor baron will be lodged. Allaying safety concerns, the court order said inmates in this barrack do not mix with other prisoners and “there has been no violence in barrack No 12 because of the nature of the facilities and the type of prisoners held there”.

Tiger From Tadoba Reserve Killed By Electric Fence

In another instance of human-animal conflict, a radio-collared tiger from the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) was found electrocuted on Saturday. The sub-adult tiger was the offspring of legendary tigress Chotitara and tiger Matkasur. The farmer on whose farm he was found, was arrested for installing non-prescribed electric fencing.

A Forest Department official said, “The body of the sub-adult radio-collared tiger was found at 10 pm on Saturday inside a farm in Bhamdeli in the Moharli buffer zone of TATR. The post mortem reveals that the tiger was electrocuted and the farm owner has been arrested.”

In German Bakery Blast Case, SC Grants Leave to State

On Monday, the Maharashtra state was granted leave by the Supreme Court against the 2016 Bombay High Court order, in which it had acquitted Mirza Himayat Inayat Baig — the lone convict in the 2010 German Bakery blast — of all the terror charges and most of the charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In March 2016, the high court had acquitted Baig of terror charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and charges of murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy under the IPC, while it had confirmed his conviction under the Explosive Substances Act and had handed him life imprisonment.

Every Drop Counts: Water Woes Haunt Mumbai's Western Suburbs

Water woes continue to haunt residents of western suburbs, especially in areas like Vile Parle, Jogeshwari and Andheri (east). People living in these areas alleged that water cut in their respective area is amounts to 50 per cent.

They said there is no improvement despite complaints being submitted to local ward officials, as well as the hydraulic engineering department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Cash-Strapped Air India Puts Iconic Tower at Nariman Point on the Block

In a bid to raise funds, Air India (AI) has put the iconic tower located at Nariman Point on sale. A tender for the same was issued by the national carrier, on Monday. Only Government Entities are allowed to participate in the bid to buy the leasehold rights of the land and the iconic tower, spread over 23 floors. The reserve price for the building hasn't been decided by AI. The last date for submitting the bid is 31 December. The building is built on a plot measuring 7512.60 sq metre. The land was leased from Mumbai district collector on a 99-year lease. It has two basements. The total built up area of the tower is 4.99 lakh sq ft. Bids can be downloaded from Tuesday till 29 December.

Mumbai: Labour Unions Call Two-Day Strike From 8 January

To protest against the BJP-led Union government’s “anti-labour policies”, labour unions in the state have called a two-day strike, as part of the nationwide protests on 8 and 9 January.

The labour unions’ demands include withdrawal of the “anti-labour” changes in the law, immediate steps to control unemployment, minimum wages for all labourers, social security benefits, like employees provident fund for all labourers, Rs 6,000 monthly pension for farmers, farm labourers and labourers in the unorganised sectors, status of government employees to scheme workers, equal work and equal pay and stoppage of employing labourers on contract for continuous work upto 12 months.

Chilly Monday: Mumbai Sees Season’s Lowest Temperature

The city recorded the season’s lowest temperature on Monday morning. The minimum temperature hit 16.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal, compared to 17 degrees on Sunday.

After the October heat spilled onto November, minimum temperatures dipped in December, from 24 degrees to 18 degrees. The city will continue to experience the chill weather for the next few days, with IMD predicting a further drop in temperature. “Northerly lower-level winds are causing the dip in temperature, but this will continue only for a few days. Then we can expect the temperature to rise again,” an IMD official said.
