The Bharat Bandh called by the Congress and other Opposition parties will take place on Monday, September 10. Several regional parties across the country have responded to the Congress' call for a protest against the rising fuel prices. In Mumbai, Congress approached both the Shiv Sena -- an ally of the ruling party BJP -- and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.

While MNS chief Raj Thackeray responded by saying that the MNS will not only support but also actively participate in the bandh, the Shiv Sena chose to remain "neutral".

The state will require 40,000 electric buses to bring a visible change in the eco-friendly sustainable transport system, for which multiple policy initiatives are under way. The state, which has already enforced its first electric vehicles policy complete with incentives to manufacturers, has plans to put 1,800 electric buses on roads in Mumbai (1,000), Pune (500) and Nagpur (300).

“Maharashtra has already initiated multi-pronged projects to address the challenge of a sustainable transport system. The integrated transport system, which would facilitate efficient use of public transport using a single travel ticket from end to end, will help help decongest roads and curtail the high level of carbon emissions,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.

4. Gang Poses as I-T Officers to Carry out 'Raids', Held Gang Behind 'IT Raid' in Santacruz Arrested

Over two months after a 48-year-old professor was cleaned out in a fake income tax raid, the Santacruz police arrested four out of five members of the gang which posed as I-T officials. The breakthrough came after the sketch drawn of the mastermind matched the accused arrested in connection with a similar offence in Mira Road last month.

According to the police, Faiyaz Kazi, 47, a scrap dealer from Pune, carried out the raids with the help of Manav Singh, 19, Salim Ansari, 21, Imran Ali, 25, and a woman who is yet to be identified. While Singh works as a car dealer, Ansari is employed as a waiter and Ali is a labourer.

5. Sexual Abuse, Lack of Trained Staff, but No Regular Audits at Mumbai Shelter Homes

It was in 2014, a counsellor from Chunauti — a field action project — found a 12-year-old mentally challenged girl with some money at Mankhurd shelter home. On probing, she revealed that a peon of a municipal school on the same premises had sexually assaulted her and gave her the money to coax her to remain silent. The NGO complained to the superintendent and a case was registered with the Turbhe Police. Four years on, the sessions court last month sentenced the 50-year-old accused to life imprisonment.

“But the immediate consequence of our complaint was that children were stopped from attending that school. We fought that decision. But the root problem remains. Security must be strengthened,” said Asha Bajpai, from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), and project director of Chunauti, which works for children in shelter homes.

Two witnesses who were summoned by the Bhima Koregaon Commission last week have objected to the presence of Milind Ekbote, one of the main persons accused of the violence, inside the hearing room.

The witnesses, Ravindra Chandane and Comrade Bhimrao Bansod, were called by the committee last week during the first round of hearings, which were held in Mumbai. All the witnesses had been asked to sit outside the hearing room and await their turn, and only one witness was allowed in for deposition at a time. However, in contravention of these rules, on two days, Ekbote entered the hearing room at the beginning and sat there till the end, even while depositions were on, the witnesses said.
