1. Speedboat Capsize: Vessel Took Hazardous Short-cut, Norms Flouted

The speedboat that capsized off the Mumbai coastline on Wednesday after hitting a submerged rock had taken an undesignated route to reach the site of the proposed Shivaji memorial statue to catch up with three other vessels headed for a ceremonial function at the site, the Mumbai Police has found in its initial probe.

One man, a worker of the Shiv Sangram party, drowned while 24 others were rescued from the speedboat named MRM-1.

The probe has further revealed that the boat, which had a capacity to ferry 13 to 15 people, including the crew, was carrying at least 10 extra passengers. Also, it was not carrying adequate number of lifejackets.

2. Mhada Denies Rambo Circus Its Final Act

The curtain has come down on Rambo Circus without the final act. Weeks after consenting, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) on Tuesday revoked its permission to the circus to set up tents at Bandra’s Reclamation ground, which has been synonymous with the iconic spectacle for the past two decades. The approval was cancelled after residents led by local BJP legislator Ashish Shelar complained that the circus would affect the ongoing development of the ground for sports. On the calendar for early November, MHADA had issued Rambo Circus permission for 45 days.

With the ‘yes’ turning to ‘no’, the owners say they are being forced to shut down the city’s only circus. One of India’s oldest circuses, Rambo was established by PT Dilip in 1991. Originally called Erina Circus and then the Great Oriental Circus and Victoria Circus, all three were later combined by Dilip to create Rambo Circus.

3. Operation Khataara: Quacks Turn Junk Cars Into Desi ‘Dispensaries’

Quacks in the city have found an unusual vehicle to peddle their wares – abandoned cars turned into desi ‘dispensaries’. These dubious apothecaries, operating without licence or permission, sell unregulated ‘medicine’ with impunity, often in the presence of police officials, and claim to offer cures for ailments and diseases ranging from gas, acidity, headache, backache and infertility to cancer and AIDS.

Mirror spotted a number of such khataras being used as dispensaries in Borivali East – between Dattapada Road and the Western Express Highway – and Santa Cruz West – near SNDT College and Billabong International School.

4. Bhima Koregaon Violence: Ekbote’s Name Omitted From Second Affidavit

The sub-divisional officer (SDO) of Daund (Pune Rural police), Ganesh More, who had charged Hindutva leader Milind Ekbotewith “actively participating” in Bhima Koregaon violence in an affidavit in the Supreme Court on February 13, 2018, has filed a fresh affidavit before the Bhima Koregaon Commission in which Ekbote’s name is missing.

The first affidavit had clearly blamed Ekbote for inciting violence and had opposed his bail application that led to his arrest. However, the second affidavit says that ‘a floating mob’ was involved in the violence and the police had to resort to tear gas when the mob went out of control.

Led by former Calcutta High Court Chief Justice JN Patel and Maharashtra’s Chief Information Commissioner Sumit Mullick, the Bhima Koregaon Commission resumed hearings in the case in Mumbai on Monday.
