1. Malegaon Blast: Purohit Moves HC Against Prosecution Nod Under UAPA

Lt Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit, accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast, has moved the Bombay High Court challenging a special court’s order rejecting his plea against the sanction for his prosecution under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

A special NIA court had last week rejected the pleas filed by Purohit and other accused -Pragya Singh Thakur, retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi and Sudhakar Chaturvedi -challenging the validity of the anti-terror law in the case.

2. ‘BJP, Sena Should Fight LS Election Together’

Union minister Ramdas Athawale, while hoping that the BJP and the Shiv Sena contest the 2019 Lok Sabha polls together, claimed that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would win more than 300 seats in the general election.

The Republican Party of India (RPI) chief, who is in talks with the BJP over fighting the upcoming Telangana Assembly polls and next year’s LS election, also expressed willingness to contest the parliamentary polls from the Mumbai South Central seat.

3. Mumbai: Man Held for ‘Attacking’ 21-year-old Convicted in 2013 Shakti Mills Case

The police on Wednesday arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the alleged attack on a 21-year-old man in the Agripada area on Monday night.

The 21-year-old had earlier been apprehended in the Shakti Mills gangrape case, where a photojournalist had been gangraped by five persons in 2013, as a minor.

In the current case, the police are on the lookout for two others involved in the attack. A senior officer said: “We arrested one Danish Sayyad (20) who was riding the bike on which he, along with two others, ambushed the complainant and attacked him with choppers and bamboos in Agripada area on Monday night.”

4. Parel Will Become a Suburban Train Terminus by March

From March next year, Central Railway commuters will be able to take trains originating at Parel as the project to convert it into a terminus is nearing completion.

CR is trying to complete the construction of the terminating and originating platforms as soon as possible, said DK Sharma, General Manager, Central Railway.

The past decade has seen an exponential rise in the number of commuters using Parel-Prabhadevi stations with Central Mumbai emerging as the new commercial district.

5. Dumper Crushes Man to Death on Hindmata Bridge

A 23-year-old man was run over by a dumper truck on Hindmata flyover on Wednesday morning after his bike skidded and he fell on the road.

His head was crushed under the wheels of the oncoming dumper.

The Bhoiwada police have registered a case against the truck driver, Agrayaprasad Patel, and placed him under arrest.

6. Indonesian Gives Birth on Board, Flight Diverted to Mumbai

An Etihad Airways flight, EY-474, from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta was on Wednesday diverted to Mumbai after a passenger of Indonesian origin went into labour and delivered a baby girl mid-air.

Doctors at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), attended to Maemunah Hambali (30), at the airport. She was immediately rushed to Seven Hills Hospital in Marol. Doctors said both the baby and the mother were stable.

Officials said the delivery took place as the aircraft was flying over the Arabian Sea. The Mumbai Air Traffic Control (ATC) officials said they received an update about the emergency landing at 6 am.

7. Sexual Harassment at Workplace: ‘No Cases From Unorganised Sector in Past Three Years in Mumbai’

The chairperson of the local committee created under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment at the Workplace Act, 2013, for the Mumbai City District said on Tuesday that not a single complaint has been received in the past three years from women working in the unorganised sector.

Doctor Anagha Sarpotdar, who heads the committee, said this during a discussion organised jointly by the Network of Women in Media, India, and the Mumbai Press Club on the #MeToo movement.

The local committees work with the office of the collector in each district and are set up primarily for women working outside the organised sectors, which tend to have Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) as mandated by the Act.
