1. Jail’s Food, Water Being Tested After 86 Inmates Fall Ill

Prisoners at Byculla jail rushed to JJ Hospital with abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea; 4-month-old son of a prisoner also admitted.

Two pregnant women were among 85 female inmates of Byculla jail who were rushed to JJ Hospital on Friday for severe abdomen pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. One male inmate and a prisoner’s four month-old son were also taken to the hospital.

All the patients are responding to treatment and are stable, said the hospital, but added that they would be kept under observation for 48 hours. The cause is yet to be established. Food and water samples from the jail are being tested by the FDA and BMC respectively.

2. Raped Man Reaches Out to Top Cops For Action

Cops wait for SC order on section 377 to book the rapist ; activists argue rape laws are gender neutral.

Even as the Supreme Court’s verdict on section 377 is awaited, the Mumbai police seem to be confused about the definition of ‘sexual assault’. They claim they were waiting for the apex court’s stance to take action in a case wherein a homosexual man levelled rape charges against another man.

3. Uddhav Thackeray Sacks Sena’s Chief Whip in Lok Sabha

Chandrakant Khaire allegedly issued a whip contrary to party’s stand on no-confidence vote in Lok Sabha.

After confusion over Shiv Sena’s three-line whip asking its members to attend the Lok Sabha session and vote in favour of the Modi government, Udddhav Thackeray has asked the party’s chief whip in Lok Sabha Chandrakant Khaire to resign from the post.

4. In a Bid to Avoid Pothole, Teacher and Her Daughter Are Almost Killed Near Mumbai

In yet another pothole-related accident in Kalyan, a school teacher and her 12-year-old daughter were injured at Patripool bridge near Ambedkar junction on Wednesday. The accident occurred when the teacher tried to swerve away from a pothole. It would have turned worse for the mother-daughter duo, had a truck driver behind them not applied emergency brakes.

The road is maintained by the state-run MSRDC.

Five people have died and several injured owing to potholes since the onset of monsoon.

5. Transporters’ Strike Sees Mixed Response in Mumbai, Thane

The nationwide transporters’ strike, which kicked off on Friday, saw a mixed response in the morning, with private buses ferrying children to school and doing the usual office run in many parts of Mumbai and Thane.

On Thursday, the School Bus Owners Association (SBOA) had announced that it would support the national strike, called by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), one of the apex transporters’ body, for a day.

The AIMTC wants the government to slash diesel prices and is protesting the hike in third-party insurance premium, toll collection policy, and national permits for passenger vehicles.

6. Fadnavis Govt Failed to Utilise Funds for Development: CAG Report

The government with a debt of Rs 3,95,858 crore has failed to utilise the higher borrowings for the development of the state.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, which was tabled in the state legislature assembly Friday, states: “The average expenditure on debt-servicing during 2017-18 was Rs 30,652 crore, which accounted for 89.1 per cent of average public debt receipts during the same period, implying that a larger percentage of debt was being used for debt-servicing. This also indicated that portion of the debt available for meeting developmental expenditure to promote growth was insignificant.”

7. Mumbai Development Authority to Revamp Signages Along Western Express Highway

Providing relief to regular motorists along the Western Express Highway, signages on the arterial road will soon be revamped. With several of them having been damaged or worn out over time, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) proposes to replace them.

“In places where the signages have been damaged, we will be replacing them with new ones. These will include directional, warning and informational signages,” said R A Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner.

8. Koregaon Bhima Riots: 75 FIRs, Eight Chargesheets Filed So Far

THE MUMBAI Police registered 75 FIRs in cases of violence across the city in the first few days of January 2018 following the violence in Koregaon Bhima and the subsequent protests by Dalits. Of the 75 cases, nearly 29 were registered in the western suburbs of the city, while 24 were registered in the eastern suburbs. The police have filed chargesheets in eight cases so far.

The accused in all 75 cases have been released on bail. The affidavit pegs losses to property incurred by the government at approximately Rs 45 lakh, not including privately owned property worth nearly Rs 1 crore that was damaged.
