2. State Wants Centre’s Nod For A Noisier Ganeshotsav

The High Court may have wanted a more peaceful Ganeshotsav this year, but politicians are in no mood to let that happen. In order to skirt an HC order directing the state not to allow loudspeakers in silence zones on any day of the year, the state has asked the Centre’s nod to relax the norms during the 10-day festival starting August 25.

Under pressure from the powerful Ganpati mandals, who have the backing of both the BJP and rival Shiv Sena, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has decided to ask the Centre to relax noise pollution norms so that Ganpati mandals can get permission to install loudspeakers in silence zones. “We will first move the Centre to seek a relaxation,” Fadnavis confirmed to Mumbai Mirror.

How does one celebrate a momentous occasion? If you are part of the Ismaili community, you’d dance to garba tunes and bung in a ‘flash-mob dance’ to add verve to the festivities. That’s exactly what the Ismailis have been doing over the last three-odd days to mark the 60th year of their spiritual leader His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV’s imamat (leadership).

The hub of the celebrations is the Ismailia Co-operative Housing Society on Clare Road in Byculla. It includes music and prayer sessions at their jamatkhanas, and a traditional “mamera” ceremony in Mazgaon that will bring the festivities to a close today.
