State-owned telecommunications service provider MTNL on Thursday, 20 June, courted controversy after it endorsed a tweet by a troll account which praised Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse.
The twitter account goes by the name Nita Ambani and posted a tweet on Godse: “Hindus nowadays are afraid of supporting Godse whereas Muslims feel proud to name their kids Taimur.”
MTNL’s response to the tweet, “It is difficult to digest the truth,” was met with severe backlash, leading it to delete the same.
“This is too much,” a user said on Twitter following MTNL’s tweet.
In the embattled run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, a controversy centred around Godse had erupted after BJP MP and Malegaon blast-accused Pragya Thakur termed him a “patriot”.
BJP Chief Amit Shah had directed Thakur to apologise for her remarks and transferred the matter to party's Disciplinary Committee.
