Cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has knocked the doors of the Supreme Court over unpaid dues by real-estate giant Amrapali for using his services for branding and marketing activities for six years, News18 reported.
Dhoni is reportedly seeking the apex court’s intervention to get close to Rs 40 crore from the group.
According to News18, Dhoni became a brand ambassador for Amrapali in 2009 and granted them exclusive rights to use his endorsement in marketing and public-relations activities.
In 2016, Dhoni quit his association with Amrapali after a social media campaign targeted him for endorsing ‘fraudulent’ builders.
According to News18, the group owes an amount in excess of Rs 38.95 crore of which Rs 22.53 crore is towards the principal amount and Rs 16.42 crore towards interest calculated at 18% simple interest per annum.
The Supreme Court on 28 February, allowed the Delhi Police to arrest Amrapali Group CMD Anil Sharma and two directors forthwith in a criminal complaint filed against them.
The court seized a batch of petitions filed by homebuyers who are seeking possession of around 42,000 flats booked in projects of the Amrapali Group.
The apex court also directed attachment of personal properties of Sharma and other directors.
It said the Economic Offence Wing (EoW) of Delhi Police can also arrest Amrapali directors – Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar – in the case.
