New Telephone Connections See Continuous Increase

Except for 2012-13 where the absolute number of telephone connections went down by more than 50 million compared to the previous year, the absolute number of telephone connections is continuously increasing every year. In the last two years, the increase is to the tune of almost six million in each single year. The drop in 2012-13 is primarily due to the removal of inactive mobile telephone connections by various service providers.

The overall tele density (number of telephone connections per 100 population) increased from 75.23 percent in March 2014 to 82.93 percent in February 2016 while during the period April 2012 to March 2014, the tele density declined from 78.66 percent to 75.23 percent again on account of the decrease in the number of connections in 2012-13. Rural tele density is 50.63 percent as in February 2016. It increased by 6.62 percent during April 2014 to February 2016.
