Controversial Tamil film Mersal, and multi-lingual blockbuster Baahubali 2 were the most talked about subjects on micro-blogging platform Twitter, featuring as a part of its ‘Most Influential Moments of the Year’, in its report on top trends of 2017.

According to the report, #Mersal emerged as the ‘Top Hashtag Trend of the Year’ by generating “colossal engagement” from the film’s fans. The film, which stars actor Vijay in lead role, was also the first ever Tamil film to get its custom emoji.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final clash – the much anticipated #INDVsPAK, was most tweeted about in any ODI ever, garnering 1.8 million tweets. Not far behind was the Mumbai Indians’ (@mipaltan) one-run win in the IPL final against Pune.

Cricket, as usual, dominated the country’s Twitter talk, with four out of top 10 hashtags on the sport.

The Golden Tweet

Yet another tweet about a southern film became the Golden Tweet or the most Retweeted Tweet of 2017. It was actor Suriya Sivakumar’s (@Suriya_offl) tweet on the the second look for his Tamil film Thaana Serndha Kootam or #TSK. The tweet was retweeted 68,856 times, the report said.
