After having reportedly confessed to the crime, the accused in the murder case of a 17-year-old girl tried to convince the police that the teenager shot herself after they had an argument.

The minor, Simran, was shot dead inside a Mercedes car parked in front of her house in Delhi's Najafgarh area on 21 December. Police arrested her friend Shubham Gupta on Saturday from outside a mall in Saket. He had been absconding since having allegedly shot Simran after a heated exchange between the two.

During the investigation, he tried to convince the police that Simran had pulled out the pistol in the middle of their argument over her affair with ex-boyfriend Nitin, reports Times of India.

He said that she held the weapon against her chest and threatened to shoot herself if he did not believe that she was telling the truth about Nitin. According to him, when he tried to snatch the gun from her hand, she pulled the trigger.

Police have, however, confronted him with ballistic evidence that shows that the pistol was shot from a distance. The report quotes senior officers as saying that the trajectory at which the bullet had travelled shows that someone else had pulled the trigger.

In fear of the police tracing him, Gupta spent the night at a friend’s place and boarded a train to Haridwar early next morning to flee from Delhi. Trying to evade the police, he shaved his head and checked into a hotel.

The investigators are recreating the sequence of events and caught the same train to Haridwar on Sunday. They will visit the hotel where he stayed using a forged identity card. And he may also be charged with a case of forgery.

He returned to Delhi on a relative's advice after he started panicking seeing his photograph flashing on news channels.
