Try the Mercedes Hit and Run Accused as an Adult: Delhi Police

According to the new amendments, accused in the age group of 16-18 can be tried as adults for certain crimes.

• Delhi Police filed a chargesheet in the Mercedes hit and run case on Thursday, to urge the Juvenile Justice Board to treat the 17-year-old accused like an adult under the new provisions of the law. The next date of hearing is 2 June.

During chargesheet filing, request letter was moved to Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) to treat juvenile offender as an adult considering his mental, physical ability to know consequences of the incident.

• The chargesheet has been filed under IPC sec 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201(destruction of evidence). Under the new provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act implemented in January, minors in the 16-18 age group can be tried as adults in cases of heinous crimes.

• Later this week, the police are likely to file a separate chargesheet against the minor’s father and his driver in connection with the case.
