1. Mumbra Society Bars Meat Eaters

A housing complex in Mumbra has barred its residents from selling or renting out flats to meat eaters, taking the extraordinary step of installing a message board that seeks to affirm the society’s strictly vegetarian-only identity.

Shiv Darshan Apartment’s decision has reignited the debate on housing restrictions that target only non-vegetarians, and it comes amid worrying reports about cow vigilantes in the country.

While apartment buildings in many areas in Mumbai have secretly or openly imposed such bans, the message board displayed at Shiv Darshan has created a stir because Mumbra has a large Muslim population.

3. Mira Road Woman, A Victim Of Faulty Hip Implant, Walks After Three Years

A 65-year-old woman from Mira Road on Saturday underwent a surgery to get a faulty implant removed, three years after she had undergone a hip replacement operation.

The patient, Khairunissa Shaikh, had no idea a cheap, faulty implant was used the first time around when she underwent the surgery at a hospital in Mira Road. She spent the last three years writhing in pain, unable to walk. Every time she would approach her surgeon, he would tell her all she needed was physiotherapy.
Finally, she got in touch with doctors at Nanavati Hospital in Vile Parle, who found the implant had, in fact, broken into pieces.

Dr Pradeep Bhosale, joint replacement surgeon at Nanavati, who operated on Shaikh, said, "The patient had been bedridden, and the X-ray reports showed the implant used during the surgery the first time around had broken into pieces. We operated on her on Saturday and she has started walking again."

Fear of general knowledge pushed an aspiring policeman to cop out of the police recruitment exam by sending a dummy candidate to write the paper for him. The police have arrested the wannabe cop, a tutor who posed as the candidate, and the mediator who helped the two forge an ID card.

The accused have been identified as Santosh Lalsingh Chhote (25), Anil Gyaneshwar Bhise (24) and Pralhad Naglat (24). All three hail from Aurangabad district.

Bhise had cleared the physical tests for police recruitment and was supposed to appear for the written exam on Wednesday. But since he was not confident about his general knowledge, his friend, Naglat, introduced him to the tutor, Chhote. A deal was finalised between the three after Chhote agreed to appear for the exam in Bhise’s place.

In love with each other since their teens, this Nalasopara couple has gone through it all — parental opposition over their inter-faith union, elopement, pregnancy, birth of the love child, kidnapping and rape case against the youth, and eventual separation. But they fought it all and got married a few days ago, as the girl turned 18 in April.

And yet, a happy ending eludes them. They are now fighting to be reunited with their child, who was taken from them and given to the Child Welfare Committee when the two were separated and sent off to different ashrams.

The Nalasopara couple has been running from pillar to post to get custody of their baby boy, who is in the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Ulhasnagar, visiting the Tulinj police station almost daily, only to be disappointed everyday.
