As Mumbai limps backs to normal after facing heavy rains for two consecutive days, Mumbai’s neighbouring Navi Mumbai and Thane districts continue to experience water logging. As a precautionary measure, three Naval teams remain stationed in Thane district along with State Disaster Management teams in case of emergency.
Meanwhile, residents of Panvel, Kharghar and other areas of Navi Mumbai took to social media to share pictures of the flooding around their homes.
On 4 August, the NDRF, SDRF, Navy and the Airforce launched joint rescue operations to rescue at least 58 residents of Thane district, who were stranded in their homes due to water logging.
Residents of Lodha’s Palava City Seek Help
Residents of the plush Palava City Township, built by Lodha group in Dombivli, shared pictures of the compound having been completely inundated and sought help from the authorities. Pictures shared on Twitter showed vehicles submerged in water.
Reacting to the waterlogging, Lodha Group issued a statement saying that the Palava City Management Association was working with the residents to help arrange for essentials and bring the situation back to normal.
“At Palava, the flooding was primarily in one sector (Casa Rio) of Phase I. The design of the township is such that there is a natural buffer between the river and the building to provide for such challenging natural situations. This ensured that while there was flooding, there was no injury or loss of life,” said the Lodha Group spokesperson. Adding,
“The flooding was restricted to 25 building out of the 400 plus buildings at Palava. It is to be noted that Palava has seen residents living for seven years now and has never seen any waterlogging. This was truly an extreme weather scenario.”Lodha Group spokesperson
Holiday for Schools and Colleges
The Maharashtra government declared a holiday for schools and colleges across Mumbai, MMR region, Palghar, Thane and Raigad districts on 5 August due to the IMD warning for heavy rains.
Aside from educational institutions, all government and semi-government employees in the MMR region have also been allowed to report late to duty.
Maharashtra is unlikely to receive any respite from the rains for the next three days. The Meteorological Department has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in areas like south Konkan and the ghats of Madhya Maharashtra on 5, 6 and 8 August.
