A foot overbridge near Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus collapsed on Thursday, 12 March, injuring many and killing at least four people.

However, this is not the first incident of bridge collapsing in India’s financial capital. The city, unfortunately, has witnessed multiple cases of bridge collapses.

1. Foot Overbridge Collapses Near CSMT (2019)

A foot overbridge near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station in Mumbai collapsed during peak office hours on Thursday, 14 March 2019.

2. Part Of Foot Overbridge Collapsed Near Mankhurd on Sion-Panvel Highway (2018)

A portion of a foot overbridge in Mumbai collapsed on 7 October 2018 near Mankhurd on Sion-Panvel Highway.

A BMC Disaster Control Room official had said that the FOB was being dismantled by the Public Works Department when the incident happened.

3. Part of Bridge Collapsed on Railway Tracks in Mumbai's Andheri (2018)

Part of a bridge collapsed on Mumbai’s Andheri raliway tracks on 3 July 2018, halting train services in the area.

Train services on Mumbai's Western Railway came to a standstill between the Bandra and Goregaon stations after a portion of a road-over bridge collapsed at the suburban Andheri station.

4. Portion of Foot Overbridge at Charni Road Station Collapses (2017)

A 67-year-old man was injured in Mumbai after a portion of a foot overbridge at the Charni Road station fell on 14 October 2017.

A day prior to that, a woman was injured at the Elphinstone Road station after a ceiling tile from a foot overbridge fell on her head.

5. Elphinstone Bridge Tragedy (2017)

On 29 September 2017, a stampede broke out at the sub-urban Elphinstone Road railway station (now known as Prabhadevi) killing around 30 people.

The foot overbridge, where the stampede occurred, connected the station to Parel from where commuters shift to Central Line.

6. Mahad Bridge Collapse (2016)

Over 40 people went missing after a bridge collapse along Mumbai-Goa Highway near Mahad, about 170 km from Mumba on 4 August 2016.

7. Bridge Collapses in Malad (2015)

A kachcha bridge commonly used by two-wheeler vehicles in Malad west collapsed on 12 December 2015.
