While on the one hand, the nation is outraged over the brutal murders of Jisha and Swathi, on the other, lawyers have been lining up to defend the accused.

An advocate named Krishnamoorthy filed a bail petition on behalf of Ramkumar, the prime accused in the murder of Infosys employee Swathi. This was apparently filed without the accused’s permission, claims the City Public Prosecutor. Ramkumar’s family also denied having any ties with the lawyer.

Four days after this, something similar happened in Kerala. Advocate BA Aloor reported that he will represent Ameerul Islam, the accused in Jisha rape and murder case. Ameerul’s relatives, however, as well as court appointed advocate P Rajan, have denied Aloor’s claim.

Lawyers filing bail petitions on behalf of the accused without informing the person concerned is not a new practice, however, particularly when a case makes national headlines.
