1. DU Student Dies After ‘Drinking’ Pesticide

An 18-year-old woman studying in Delhi University allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide on the college premises on Wednesday, 25 July. Police said she was found unconscious in the college’s toilet and taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead. DCP (west) Vijay Kumar said no suicide note was recovered from her possession and that her family does not suspect foul play.

Police received a call at 9.50 am from Bharati College in Janakpuri. On reaching the spot, police found that a second-year student had locked herself inside the toilet and consumed pesticide. Police also found a paper cutting knife in her bag.

Police said some students heard her crying and knocked on the door. When she did not respond, they informed the staff.

2. Indian Student Killed in Australia

A 25-year-old Indian student in Australia was killed hours after a dinner date with a woman he met through a dating site. Maulin Rathod, an accounting student was reportedly found critically injured at the woman’s house on Monday night, 23 July, and taken to a hospital in Melbourne, where he died the next day.

Rathod had visited the 19-year-old woman’s house in Sunbury suburb in west Melbourne at about 9 pm (local time) on Monday. It is, however, not confirmed as to who called the police but media reports say that when police reached the spot, they found Rathod with life-threatening injuries.

The woman, who lived alone, has been arrested and charged with intentionally causing serious injury. Reports said her charges will be reviewed following his death and could be upgraded to murder.

3. Dance Teacher Held for Rape, Blackmail

A dance teacher has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor student and blackmailing her with an obscene video, the police said on Wednesday, 25 July.

Rudra alias Sumit Ghosh (24) was arrested on Wednesday, following a complaint by the 16-year-old victim’s parents on Tuesday, 24 July. The police also arrested Rudra’s parents for their alleged involvement in blackmailing the victim. When Rudra began demanding more money, the girl told her neighbour’s driver about the incident and he informed her parents.

4. Cancer Patient Falls to Death from Balcony; Police Suspect Suicide

A 52-year-old Central government employee died under mysterious circumstances after falling from the fourth floor of his house in Pimpri Gaon, Pune. The incident occurred at around 10.45 am on Wednesday, 25 July.

Indrajeet Pawar died after falling off the balcony adjacent to his apartment on the fourth floor of Sunrise Apartments at Sudarshan Chowk in Pimpri Gaon. While his family claims that the fall was accidental, police say that he committed suicide.

“He was suffering from stomach cancer which was detected over a month ago. He had become very weak,” said the victim’s younger son, Abhijeet Pawar.

5. Four 'Cattle Smugglers' Assaulted by Mob in UP

Four alleged cattle smugglers transporting a dead buffalo were assaulted by a mob in the early hours of Wednesday, 25 July, police said. Villagers alleged that the men were caught in Nagla Mandhata village while they were transporting the buffalo’s carcass in a pick-up van. They were, however, rescued by the police who intervened in time, Hasayan SHO Jitendra Kumar said. The owner of the buffalo alleged that the men had poisoned the animal.

Superintendent of Police Sushil Ghule said action would be initiated if it was found that the men were cattle smugglers.

6. Farmer Hangs Self in Hamirpur

Ranveer Singh, a 28-year-old farmer, committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Imlia village of Hamirpur district on Wednesday, 25 July, police said.

While the farmer’s family claimed he ended his life after allegedly failing to pay off Rs 5 lakh loan taken from private lenders and relatives, police claimed he took the extreme step following a tiff with his wife.

Pooja Singh informed the police that while the family was sleeping outside the house on Wednesday morning, her husband got up and locked himself in the house.

7. Missing Teen’s Body Found in Vashi Creek

The 17-year-old son of an income-tax inspector who had gone missing five days ago after appearing for exams at his Nerul school, had allegedly committed suicide. His body was recovered from Vashi creek, in Mumbai, on Tuesday, 24 July. Police claimed he had left home after a quarrel with his father.

The teenager did not return to his house at Antop Hill after the exams on 19 July. His parents had lodged a missing person’s complaint. He used to return from college around 4.30 pm, but on Thursday, he sent a text message to his father informing that he will never return and wrote, ‘You all take care of yourself ’.

8. Pre-School Owner Held for Molesting 2-Year-Old Student

The franchise owner of a well-known chain of pre-schools in Mumbai was arrested on charges of allegedly molesting a two-year-old girl on the school premises recently. The girl’s parents registered a police complaint on Monday, 23 July.

The owner allegedly called the girl, who is from the western suburbs, to his office and touched her inappropriately on Monday. The girl started to cry and later complained to her parents. A complaint was lodged under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. “The accused was arrested and produced before the Dindoshi sessions court as the offence is sessions triable,” said a senior police officer.

9. Drunk Youth Steals Bus for Joyride, Crashes Into House

A Class XII boy, allegedly high on alcohol, drove a Haryana Roadways bus from Mirchpur village of Hisar district and crashed it into a house at Rajpura Bhain village of Jind district on Wednesday, 25 July. Accused Praveen (19), a resident of Mirchpur, has been booked for theft. The bus was parked in his village on Tuesday night when he got inside and drove it rashly.

According to information available, the accused got drunk at Patiala Chowk in Jind and found a state roadways bus parked in the village while returning home. He started the bus with a motorcycle key and drove it towards Jind. He lost control of it near Rajpura Bhain village and crashed the bus into a house.
