1. Another Sikh Man Assaulted in US Within a Week

A 71-year-old Sikh man was brutally assaulted by two unidentified men in California, the second attack on a community member in about a week.

Disturbing footage from a surveillance camera shows Sahib Singh Natt walking alone on the side of a road early morning on 6 August in Manteca, California when two men, wearing hoodies, walking from the opposite direction approach him.

Natt stops on seeing the men and the two men are seen talking to him. Singh then walks past them but they continue to follow and talk with him.

One of the men, who is wearing a black hoodie, suddenly kicks Natt in the stomach and the elderly man falls down on the road, with his turban coming off.

The man in the black hoodie viciously kicks Natt three times near his head as he lay on the street. He then starts leaving again, pauses, turns around, and then spits at Natt.

2. Deoria Case: 18 Missing Inmates Traced, Says UP Police

Uttar Pradesh Police said, on 8 August, that it has traced 18 inmates who were missing from the infamous shelter home in Deoria. According to the police, 7 inmates are still missing and the investigation is on.

Addressing a press conference at Deoria District Collectorate, Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohan P Kanay said, "On 4 July, Girija (owner of the shelter home) had given a list containing names of 43 inmates enrolled in the shelter home. The list included young boys, girls and old women"

"When her shelter home was raided on 5 August, 23 inmates including 20 girls and 3 boys were rescued. We have been able to trace 18 other inmates who have been released from the shelter home. We have been able to successfully verify the details of 13 inmates and rest are being examined," added SP Deoria.

3. FIR Registered in Hyderabad After Video of Beheaded Puppies Goes Viral

Humane Society International (India) lodged an FIR in a case of puppies being beheaded in Hyderabad, on 8 August. The video of mother of the puppies crying next to their bodies has gone viral on social media.

The case came to light when the video was circulated by a concerned citizen and local activist, Hema Bandela. She was at the spot where the mother dog was crying over the dead bodies of her puppies. A complaint was then filed at Hussaini Alam police station, after which the police registered an FIR and begun investigation. The carcasses of the puppies have been sent for post mortem.

Apoorva Katpatal, Cruelty Response Manager, HSI/India, said, "We are appalled at the gruesomeness of the incident. This is a shocking incident, not only from the point of view of the animal but also human beings around the perpetrator since we know that the animal is only the first strike".

4. Unhappy After Second Girl Child, Man Smashes 28-Day-Old Daughter to Death

Unhappy over the birth of his second girl child, a man smashed his 28-day-old infant to death in Firozabad, UP on Wednesday afternoon. The victim was killed in front of the baby’s mother Asha Devi.

The accused accused father, identified as Bunty, was arrested and booked under IPC section 302 (murder).

According to Ravinder Dubey, SHO North, “Ananya was the second daughter of the couple, but Bunty wanted a boy. After a brief scuffle with his wife, the accused snatched the infant from Asha’s arms and smashed her on the ground. killing her instantly.”

Bunty and Asha have been married for more than two years. Their first daughter is one-and-a-half years old. Bunty was working as a wage labourer, while his wife is a home maker.

5. SC Seeks J&K Govt's Reply on Plea Alleging Custodial Torture of Kathua Case Witness

The Supreme Court, on 8 August, sought a response from the J&K government on a plea by Talib Hussain, a key witness in the Kathua gang rape-and-murder case, alleging custodial torture by the state police in an alleged fake rape case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra considered the submission of senior advocate Indira Jaising that Hussain had been brutally tortured in police custody and judicial intervention was needed.

The bench asked the senior lawyer to explain as to how a writ of habeas corpus (produce the body) can be filed in the present case as the accused, Hussain, is in lawful custody of the police.

Jaising referred to a Supreme Court judgment and said that such a petition can be filed even in case of custodial torture.

The bench asked the state government to file the response in a week and asked the lawyers to serve a copy of the petition on the advocate general of the state.

6. Man Who Set Afire 40-Year-Old Woman, Her Two Kin Held in UP

A man, who had set ablaze a 40-year-old woman, with whom he was allegedly having an extramarital affair, and her two kin in Maharashtra, was arrested from Uttar Pradesh, an official said on 8 August.

The accused, Jalaluddin Khan (55), had set afire the woman, Sangita Suresh Devre, her married daughter, and infant granddaughter at her home in Panchavati on Monday, 6 August after an argument.

While the nine-month-old infant and Devre died, the third victim, who suffered 80 percent burn injuries, was admitted to the Nashik Civil Hospital, where her condition was stated to be serious, Panchavati police station in-charge Madhukar Kad said.

Following the incident, the man, who is married, fled to Aligarh in UP.

Nashik Police managed to trace him and arrested him from Aligarh on 7 August evening, Kad said.

The accused has been booked under IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder), he said.

7. Man Arrested for Raping Minor Neighbour in Bengal

A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping his minor neighbour at Nadia district of West Bengal, a police officer said on 8 August.

The accused, a worker at a local factory, was taken into custody yesterday after the 14-year-old girl, who lives with her blind parents at Baigachhi village of the district, filed a complaint, he said.

The girl's parents begs at railway platforms and train compartments to make ends meet, the officer said.

"In the FIR, the teenager alleged that her neighbour had taken her to a nearby brick field on 1 August and raped her. The accused then threatened the girl with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone. Out of fear, the girl chose to keep the matter to herself," he said.

8. Woman Raped in Moving Train in Madhya Pradesh

A labourer has been arrested for allegedly raping a 30-year-old woman in a moving train in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur district, police said on 8 August.

The woman, a ragpicker, boarded the empty general compartment of the Vindhyachal Express from the Madan Mahal station in Jabalpur city on 6 August, Monday evening.

After the train left the station at around 8:40 pm, the victim fell asleep, following which the accused allegedly raped her, said Y Mishra, station in-charge, Government Railway Police (GRP), Jabalpur.

A railway police officer, who was on duty in the train, rescued the woman and caught Umesh Valmiki (32), a labourer. The victim alighted at a station in Katni district and registered a complaint at the GRP police station there, Mishra said.

A case has been registered under various sections and a probe is on, he added.

9. Seven Youths Allege Torture; Police Officer Suspended in Punjab

Seven youths were allegedly tortured at Sanour police station near Patiala, Punjab prompting authorities to suspend an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), police officials said on 8 August.

ASI Narinder Singh, along with a constable, intercepted seven youths, who were on their way to attend a religious function at a shrine in Patiala on Sunday, they said.

Amardeep Singh, one of the victims, alleged that the ASI was in an inebriated state and started misbehaving with them.

"When we started making videos of his unruly behaviour, the ASI took us to Sanour police station," the victim said.

In his complaint, Amardeep Singh claimed that the ASI physically tortured them and then took him to a secluded place and poured liquor into his mouth.

Describing the allegations as "serious in nature", SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu suspended ASI Narinder Singh and ordered a probe into the matter.
