1. Minor Girl Raped in Chennai for Over Six Months

The mother of an 11-year-old girl with hearing impairment has lodged a complaint with the All Women Police Station that her daughter was raped by a lift operator and two of his accomplices at an apartment.

The victim belongs to a north Indian family settled in the city. The complainant alleged that her daughter was sexually assaulted by around 15 men multiple times, between 15 January and 5 July.

According to the complaint, lift operator Ravi took her to isolated places in the apartment, such as the basement, the public washroom, terrace and the gym, and abused her.

2. Sex Chats With 16-Year-Old Boy Leads to 53-Year-Old Mumbai Businessman’s Arrest

A 53-year-old city businessman has been charged under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) for allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor. Identified on the basis of sex chats saved on the minor’s phone, the businessman was arrested on Monday, 16 July.

Khar Police had been investigating a case involving a 16-year-old boy, whose mother had filed a complaint in June, after she learnt that her son was on a dating app popular with homosexual men. “Around a month back, the mother of the minor noticed an unknown man leaving from the main door. She asked her son, but initially did not get to know the truth. Later, the boy confided and informed her about the app,” said a police officer.

3. Bihar Engineer Kidnapped, ‘Forced to Marry’ Woman at Gunpoint

A man in Bihar’s Vaishali district has alleged he was kidnapped, threatened and forced to marry a school dropout against his will at gunpoint, a charge denied by the woman.

The 23-year-old woman, Priyanka Kumari, has claimed that the family of Durgesh Sharan, an engineer with the Indian Railways and posted at Samastipur diesel locomotive shed, had demanded a dowry for the wedding.

Priyanka, who dropped out of school after Class 10, said she knew Sharan, 30, and met him during a wedding ceremony about a year ago.

Mahua sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Malti Kumari confirmed that Sharan was abducted and coerced into the ‘pakadua vivah’, and said they have sent him and the woman to a court in Vaishali to record their statements. The police would act on the court’s directive, she added.

4. Mentally Challenged Woman Beaten Up on Suspicion of Being a Child Lifter

A mentally challenged woman was beaten up in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal on suspicion of being child-lifter, police said on Tuesday, 17 July.

The incident occurred on Monday evening around 8 at Barogharia Gram Panchayat area in Dhupguri Block.

Locals claimed that the woman was spotted in the neighbourhood a few times over the past few days and used candies to lure children.

“There have been incidents of child trafficking here. We found that the woman was carrying several candies,” Samir Roy, a resident of Barogharia said.

5. Serial Offender Convicted in Second Rape Case, Prosecution Seeks Death

A serial offender in Mumbai convicted multiple times for sexual abuse of minors may face the death penalty. The prosecution on Tuesday filed an application before a special court seeking death penalty for 38-year-old Ayyaz Mohammed Ali Ansari after he was convicted in a second case of rape. Ansari is already serving a life imprisonment awarded to him in April 2017, along with serving multiple prison terms for sexual harassment of minor girls.

With the Criminal Law Amendment, 2013, Section 376 (E) of the Indian Penal Code provides for death penalty to an offender who has been previously convicted of rape. The provision was first used in 2014 to award the death penalty to three persons, convicted in two separate cases of rape in the Shakti Mills compound. The court will hear arguments on the application moved by special public prosecutor Geeta Sharma on Wednesday. It will also hear Ansari’s advocate on the plea.

6. 5 Boys Rape 8-Year-Old Girl in Uttarakhand

Five boys allegedly raped an eight-year-old girl in their neighbourhood when her parents were not at home in Sahaspur, the police said on Tuesday.

During questioning by police, the boys, aged between nine to 14 years, said that they had watched pornography on a mobile phone two days before committing the crime, a police official said.

The alleged incident, that took place on 12 July, came to light late on Saturday evening when the victim's parents reported the matter to the police.

The accused boys were detained and they were remanded to a juvenile home by Chief Magistrate of Juvenile Justice Board Bhavdeep Rawat.

7. Man Arrested for Trying to Rape Mentally Unstable Girl

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Odisha's Jajpur district on Tuesday for allegedly trying to rape a "mentally unstable" girl, a police officer said.

Referring to the complaint filed by the girl's parents, the officer said that the 13-year-old girl was allegedly attacked yesterday afternoon while attending to the nature's call at Bada Balikuda village in Balichandrapur police station area of the district.

"Finding her alone in the bushes, the accused, who hails from the same village, apparently held her from behind, and tried to undress her. On hearing the girl scream, local people rushed to her rescue," said Rakesh Chandra Tripathy, the inspector-in-charge of Bailchandrapur police station.

8. Teenager Stabbed to Death by Brother-in-Law

A 17-year-old widow was allegedly stabbed to death by her brother-in-law and his accomplices in southeast Delhi's Badarpur, police said on Tuesday, 17 July.

It is suspected that the accused was nursing a grudge against his sister-in-law ever since his brother allegedly committed suicide two months ago, they added.

The police were informed around 7:45 pm on Monday about the incident. A police team reached Tajpur Pahari in Badarpur and found the girl lying unconscious on the roof of her house with stab injuries.

She was rushed to Apollo Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead, said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south east).

"The victim's mother and grandparents were present at the spot when the incident took place. In their statement to the police, the family members alleged that the girl's brother-in-law, along with two others, had come to their house and stabbed her with a knife and fled from the spot," the DCP said.
