1. Delhi: Man Held for Fraud Worth Rs 1.4 Crore

A man from Hyderabad was arrested by Delhi Police’s Crime Branch for allegedly impersonating a bureaucrat and looting people by promising to help them procure petrol pump licences.

Surappagari Sampath Kumar (29) was arrested on Tuesday, 2 July, from a Delhi hotel on the charges of duping, forgery and criminal intimidation.

“The complainant, Malipaddy Sandeep, alleged he was deceived into giving Rs 1.4 crore to Kumar and his associate, K Ramaswamy, in 2017,” said G Ram Gopal Naik, DCP (Crime).

Police said that after paying the amount, Sandeep was unable to contact the accused. When the accused responded, he refused to return the money and threatened to kill him if he approached police. Sandeep eventually approached police in February.

2. Kolkata: Five TMC Men Beaten up for ‘Not Chanting Jai Shri Ram’

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday alleged that five of its workers were beaten up by BJP men in Raiganj in North Dinajpur district after they refused to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. The incident took place at Singardaha village under Karandighi police station.

The BJP has, however, denied the allegation.

Of the five injured, who were first taken to Karandighi primary health centre, two of them have been shifted to Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital.

“We have started an investigation into the incident,” said a senior police officer. However, no one has been arrested yet.

3. Two Held for Betting on India-Bangladesh WC Cricket Match

Two men were arrested from Andheri in Mumbai for allegedly betting on India-Bangladesh World Cup cricket match, police said on Wednesday, 3 July.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Amboli police raided a flat on Yari Road in Andheri on Tuesday night and found the duo placing bets on the match, an official said.

The two bookies were caught accepting bets on mobile phoness, police said.

4. Teen Held for Sexually Abusing 12-Yr-Old, Pushing Her off Building

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on Tuesday, 2 July, for allegedly sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl and pushing her off the eighth floor of her building in Goregaon when she tried to resist him. The boy’s parents were also arrested later in the day for aiding him in the crime.

The incident took place on Saturday and the girl, a Class VII student who is battling for life, is on ventilator at Hiranandani Hospital. She has undergone two major surgeries on her head, said the police.

The girl’s parents said that she had stepped out of the house at 8.40pm on Saturday to eat paani-puri at a nearby shop and around 9.40pm they came to know that she was lying in a pool of blood in the society compound with her face and head smashed. They have told the police that the accused boy lives in nearby slums and had been harassing as well as stalking their daughter since a couple of months.

5. SC Lawyer Killed in Noida Home, Lens on 2 Helps

A 60-year-old Supreme Court lawyer was found murdered inside her bungalow in Noida Sector 31 on Tuesday night. Police said two of the lawyer’s domestic helps –husband and wife – who had been hired last week were absconding and were suspects in the case.

The victim, Kuljeet Kaur, was found dead with her hands and legs tied up and her mouth gagged with a piece of cloth by the police.

A Honda City car, along with some cash and valuables were found to be missing. Police said they suspected the role of the domestic helps in the murder but are also investigating property dispute as a probable cause.

6. Seer Held for Sexually Assaulting Minor Boy

A seer from Badeti-based ashram was held for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor boy in Chinyalisaur area of Uttarkashi district on Wednesday. The arrest comes following a complaint by Bal Kalyan Samiti members.

The accused, identified as Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) resident Raguveer Das, has been booked under relevant sections of the IPC and POCSO Act. Meanwhile, police have sent the victim boy to the custody of Chile Help Line.

“The victim told us that the seer sexually assaulted him. Besides this, the accused seer also thrashed the boy when he tried to resist his advances,” Suresh Panwar, member of Bal Kalyan Samiti Uttarkashi, told TOI.

7. Minor Raped in Rajasthan, Rumors of Death Spark Violence

A 7-year-old girl was abducted and raped by an unidentified youth in Jaipur’s Shastri Nagar area on Monday, 1 July night, sending the neighbourhood into a tailspin of rumour-propelled violence that continued till almost dawn and left several cops injured and around 60 vehicles damaged.

According to the police, the girl said that the accused abducted her around 8 pm when she was heading to a shop barely 200 m from her house. “A bikeborne youth introduced himself to the minor as her father’s friend and took her to a secluded place. After raping her, the accused dropped her off near her house around 9.30 pm,” a cop said.

8. Gorakhpur: Man Killed Over Cattle Dispute, 2 held

Tension gripped Tiwaripur locality in Gorakhpur after a 30-year-old Hindu man was allegedly killed by four miscreants belonging to another community over a minor dispute over cattle grazing, police said on Wednesday, 3 July.

The body of Ravi Kumar Nishad was recovered from the bushes on Tuesday evening, following which an FIR was lodged against four persons who lived in the same area. Two of them, Munnar and Kamal, have been arrested while Aziz and Nizamuddin are absconding.

The police have launched a hunt to arrest them while the victim’s body has been sent for autopsy.

9. Muzaffarnagar: Criminal Freed on Way to Jail, Cop Injured

A jailed criminal escaped from police custody after his five associates opened fire at a police escort team, injuring a 36-year-old sub-inspector, at Salarpur village in Muzaffarnagar on Tuesday, 2 July.

SI Durg Vijay Singh suffered gunshot injuries in his stomach and was admitted to the district hospital in Muzaffarnagar. Doctors said his condition was critical.

The exchange of fire took place when the jailed man, Rohit alias Chandu, was being taken to Mirzapur jail after being produced in a court in connection with a murder case. He faces 22 cases of murder, attempt to murder and loot.
