1. Kamal Prevented from Campaigning, EC Asked to Cancel Sulur Bypolls

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party General Secretary A Arunachalam on Friday, 17 May, sent a petition to the Election Commission asking to cancel the Sulur by-elections, bringing it to the notice of the poll body that the party president, Kamal Haasan, was denied permission to campaign in Sulur for the constituency candidate Mayilsami.

According to the petition, the application for permission for Haasan to campaign was made on 7 May, but no information was received about the same till 16 May, a day before the campaigning was scheduled. Permission for the same was cancelled, stating law and order issues, with the relevant authority adding that it had received many petitions asking for permission to be denied to the campaign, the MNM petition claimed.

He said that they can’t assume if it was the post office that didn’t deliver, or the agency itself. The cards belonged to people from a few villages, including Sekal, Kattimedu and Aathirangam.

3. Customs Foil Attempts to Smuggle Gold Worth Rs 2 Crore at Chennai Airport

Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) sleuths belonging to the Customs department foiled attempts to smuggle 6kg gold worth Rs 2 crore at Chennai airport. On Friday morning, AIU sleuths intercepted Jiyavul Haque, Syed Malungu, both from Ramanathapuram, and Mohd Khalifathullah, of Chennai, who had arrived from Colombo by a Sri Lankan Airlines flight, on suspicion of carrying gold.

Later, two more passengers – Shiva, of Villupuram and Farzana Begum Tajuddin, of Mumbai – who arrived from Dubai by an Indigo Airlines flight, were also intercepted. During a personal search, gold in rubbery spread was found concealed in their rectum.

4. Illegal Groundwater Extraction: HC Cracks Whip

Cracking the whip on the large-scale illegal extraction of groundwater around Chennai and its sale for exorbitant rates, the Madras High Court, which took cognisance of a media report, on Friday initiated suo motu contempt action against senior authorities and few individuals for the non-implementation of its judgment of October.

The judge sought to know from the respondents as to what the actions initiated by the State were to regulate the extraction of groundwater and the actions taken on complaints sent by the public.

5. 20-Year-Old Woman Kills Hubby, Child

A young woman killed her husband and one-year-old son at Arcot near here and lodged a police complaint they had gone missing since 13 May. They had been married for a couple of years and it was a love marriage, Deepika, 20, told the police in her complaint.

She cracked under intense questioning and confessed killing him because he was harassing her almost every evening after coming home drunk. She also said she decided to kill the child as she did not want to leave him to face taunting from society calling him the child of a murderer. She said she buried them both close to a lake bund near their house.
