1. Modi’s TN Visit: #MaduraiThanksModi and #GoBackModi Vie on Twitter
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Madurai, where he laid the foundation stone for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a hashtag war broke out on micro-blogging site Twitter between DMK and BJP supporters. The two contesting hashtags – #MaduraiThanksModi and #GoBackModi – were among the top trends on Sunday, 27 January.
DMK leaders from the state as well as the official handle of Tamil Nadu Youth Congress were among those tweeting using this hashtag. This is however not the first time that #GoBackModi is trending in Tamil Nadu.

2. Over 400 Tamil Nadu Government Teachers Suspended for Striking
Government suspended nearly 420 school teachers across the State late on Saturday, five days after teachers joined the indefinite strike by Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Organisations and Government Employees’ Organisations (JACTTO-GEO), a highly placed source in the School Education Department said.
While only about 10 teachers were suspended in Chennai, several of their counterparts were suspended in the Cauvery Delta, where the protests were the most intensified. “The suspension was inevitable. The teachers were arrested and came out on bail. We cannot allow them to work when they have an FIR that involves them,” the official said.

3. Sleepless in T Nagar, Thanks to Construction
Residents of Pinjala Subramaniam Street in T Nagar have been having sleepless nights for the past 10 days on account of a commercial building coming up on Usman Road. The relentless construction activity on the structure, ravaged by a fire in June 2017, is causing severe hardship to motorists as well, giving rise to traffic congestion, dust and noise pollution, residents complain.
Since the construction of the Usman Road flyover, Pinjala Subramaniam Street has become the main thoroughfare for thousands of motorists to enter and exit the commercial locality. Also, as the street houses several apartments, the residents are the worst affected by the resultant noise and dust pollution.

4. Rash Driving by Teen Leaves 2 Injured, 10 Vehicles Damaged
A 17-year-old youth on Sunday drove his relative’s car recklessly, injuring two persons and damaging 10 vehicles parked by the roadside in Washermanpet. The teenager, a first-year college student, had come to Chennai to meet one of his relatives in Washermanpet.
On Sunday, when the relative had gone out, the boy took control of the car saying he would drive inside the house, the police said. But he took the car out and lost control of the vehicle. He crashed against a few vehicles on a narrow lane near his house. A CCTV footage doing rounds on message-sharing platforms shows the car zipping through a street and damaging a motorcycle. A few motorists are seen chasing the car.

5. ‘Maduravoyal-City Port Elevated Corridor Works to Begin Soon’
The work on the 20.3-km Maduravoyal-Chennai Port elevated corridor is likely to begin early this year, according to Chennai Port chairman P Raveendran. Addressing a gathering after hoisting the National flag at CISF ground to mark the 70th Republic Day, Raveendran said that the Port will see a significant increase in cargo volumes including containers and cars once the project is completed.
He also said that Chennai Port Trust is pursuing with Southern Railways for development of Multi-modal logistic Park or Dry Port at Jolarpettai. It aims at increasing the rail share of container movement, thereby reducing the road congestion at Chennai Port.
