1. 74 Gujarat MLAs Get I-T Letters Seeking Asset Info

The Income-Tax department, which is examining the affidavits filed by political candidates who fought the 2017 Gujarat assembly polls, have issued “letters” to 74 MLAs seeking more information regarding their assets.

More letters have been issued to MLAs from the BJP to determine “discrepancies” in their affidavits with regard to the I-T returns filed by them during the elections, official sources said.

“These are not notices but letters that have been issued to MLAs of all parties, including the BJP, Congress and regional parties. It has been done as per the mandate of the Election Commission (EC) that seeks to verify the affidavits filed by the candidates contesting the polls,” a senior I-T official said on Wednesday, 17 July.

The official, however, did not disclose the content of the letters issued or the names MLAs to whom they were issued.

2. One Month On, 11 Booked for Abetment in Cop Suicide Case

Almost a month after a woman constable with Kalupur police, identified as Falguni Shreemali, was found hanging at her home in Chandkheda, police have booked 11 people in the abetment of suicide.

Twenty-seven-year-old Shreemali was a resident of Sahaj Platinum in Chandkheda and had been posted at Kalupur police station. On 18 June, she killed herself by hanging from the bathroom of her residence. During the investigation, cops had recovered a suicide note from the victim.

In it, she stated that nobody was responsible for her death and that it is her own decision to end her life. The note also mentioned that despite having a police job, she failed to provide justice to her parents regarding a dispute over their native house in Vadgam.

In the suicide note, she mentioned the names of eight people and alleged that they used to harass her family when they were living in Vadgam, because of which, the family had to leave Vadgam and settle in Ahmedabad.

3. Finish Probe and File Charge Sheets in SC/ST Atrocities: Gujarat DGP

In the wake of rising cases of atrocities against the Dalit community in Gujarat, the Director General of Police (DGP) Shivanand Jha has asked the police to complete pending SC/ST atrocity cases, file charge sheets in a maximum of 60 days and provide ample security to the marginalized community, wherever required in the state.

State officials told The Indian Express that as per an estimate, over 800 cases of atrocities against SC/ST communities have been pending in Gujarat.

In a meet held between the DGP, senior officials and Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs), SC/ST cell, of all districts on Tuesday, 16 July, Jha reviewed the status of old and pending cases of atrocities and pushed for fast-paced investigations.

4. Cops ‘Assault’ Dalit Youth for Demanding Accident Report

A 28-year-old Dalit man from Una in Gir Somnath was allegedly assaulted by two policemen at the Una police station on 14 July, when he approached them to get the copy of an accident report. The victim, Ramesh Makwana, is admitted to Junagadh Civil Hospital and an FIR was filed against constables Ajaysinh and Jairajsinh.

According to Makwana, a daily wage labourer from Paldi village in Una, he went to Una police station on 14 July to get a copy of the accident report in which his elder brother Dilip Makwana (42) was involved.

“My elder brother Dilip met with an accident on 10 June, 2019, while he was on his way to home near Delwada village of Una. He was admitted in a hospital with serious injuries on his face, legs and hands. My brother had an insurance policy and to claim the amount, we needed the accident report from police. I filed the report in Una police station on 9 July and for the past four days, I have been visiting the police station to get a copy of the report,” said Makwana in his complaint.

Dhanani told the house that on page 15 of the report it has clearly stated that though the irrigation potential created was up to 16.11 lakh, the maximum area irrigated/utilised was only around 6 lakh ha.
