1. Over 2.9L People Visit Statue of Unity During Diwali Vacations

The Gujarat government on Monday said over 2.91 lakh tourists visited the Statue of Unity during Diwali vacations over the last 10 days.

It said the total number of visitors to the Sardar Patel Memorial since it was inaugurated on October 31 last year and opened for the public the next day now stood at over 29.32 lakh.

"A total of 27.17 lakh tourists visited Statue of Unity during its first year, that is from November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2019. While in the first 10 days of November this year, 2.91 lakh tourists visited the site, taking the total number of visitors to the spot to 29.32 lakh," a release from the state government said.

2. S Jaishankar Urges Gujarat HC to Quash Congress Leader's Plea on Rs By-Poll

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar filed an affidavit in the Gujarat High Court on Monday, 11 November defending his election to the Rajya Sabha from the state, claiming that the Election Commission broke no rules by holding separate elections for two seats.

Congress leader Gaurav Pandya, who had lost to BJP candidate Jaishankar in the Rajya Sabha by-election held in July this year, had filed an election petition in the Gujarat High Court, claiming that the EC's decision to hold separate bypolls to two Rajya Sabha seats violated Constitutional provisions.

3. GCUC Holds Meeting to Make Beneficiaries Aware of Its Schemes

The Gujarat State Commission for Unreserved Classes (GSCUC) held a meeting in Ahmedabad Monday, 11 November in order to make beneficiaries aware about the education and employment assistance schemes offered by the body.

“It is the 18th district the commission has covered towards spreading awareness and the commission’s cause. Leaders of various social organisations representing unreserved castes and communities attended the meeting. We have appealed to them to inform and help beneficiaries of its various schemes so that maximum can enjoy them,” said Hansraj Gajera, chairman of GSCUC.

The schemes offered by the GHCUC include education loan, foreign education loan, food bill assistance, coaching assistance, coaching assistance for GUJCET, NEET, coaching assistance for competitive exams, self employment loan, technical education loan for medical and law and financial assistance for commercial pilot training.

4. Major Fire in Bharuch Yarn Factory, None Injured

A major fire broke out in a yarn factory at Amod village in Bharuch district Monday, 11 November morning. Seven fire tenders took around seven hours to douse the flames in the morning. However, in the afternoon again fire broke out in some pockets and the fire tenders were busy putting it out till the time of filing this repaort.

No injuries have been reported so far.

More than a hundred workers who were inside the building when the fire broke out at 3.30 am immediately evacuated the building and informed the firm manager who then contacted the fire department of Ankleshwar GIDC.

5. Man Held for Selling Marijuana After Info From Duo Arrested for Attacking Him

The Vadodara police on Monday arrested a 58-year-old man for allegedly selling marijuana from his residence in Harni road area, after two men accused of attacking him informed police of the same.

According to police, the man, identified as Sanjay Tank, complained late on Sunday that two people tried to attack him near the GSPC Circle on Mangal Pandey road when he stopped at a tea stall with his driver and helper. One of the alleged attackers, Ankur Thakor, was Tank’s former neighbour and the other one was Thakor’s friend, Ranchod Bharwad.

On seeing them approach with sharp edged weapons, he tried to flee the spot in his car, but the two accused followed him. After chasing Tank for a few kilometres, they rammed into his car and then got down and broke the window panes. The accused also attacked him with a knife and Tank sustained two stab wounds on the hand and stomach, he said in his complaint.
