1. 1,269 Child Labourers Rescued in Five Years
In the past five years, a total of 1,269 children employed as child labourers were rescued in various raids conducted across the state. Over 38 percent of these children were found during raids in Surat district.
A total of 2,997 raids were conducted under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act (1986) across the state between 2013 and 2018, states a written reply tabled earlier this year by the Gujarat government.
This was in response to an unstarred question posed by Sureshkumar Patel, a Congress MLA from Mansa constituency. The maximum number of raids were carried out in Vadodara (146), followed by Ahmedabad (137) and Surat (129) during the five-year period between 1 October, 2013 to 30 September, 2018.
Raids in Surat saw 490 children being rescued, while Ahmedabad stood second with 157 children being rescued. Rajkot was third on the list with 117 children being rescued, of which 80 were rescued in a single year between October and September, 2018. “In every district, there is a cell which conducts these raids.”

2. 40 Doctors, Including Padma Awardees, Join Bjp
Around 40 renowned doctors from Gujarat, on Tuesday, 13 August joined BJP in the presence of state party president Jitu Vaghani at party headquarters, Shri Kamalam. The doctors joined the party during the ongoing enrolment drive of the party.
Some renowned names in the field who joined BJP include Padma awardees, cardiologist Dr Tejas Patel and neurologist Dr Sudhir Shah. Other noted doctors include cancer surgeon Dr Kaustubh Patel, eye surgeon Dr Ashish Nagpal, spine surgeon Dr Arvind Gosai, and cardiologist Dr Samir Dani.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Sudhir Shah said that he felt very proud about joining BJP, adding that the party’s ideology is that of protecting the country’s sovereignty, legacy of dharma, spiritualism and culture. Shah also hailed the recent decision of the central government to remove the special status of Jammu & Kashmir as an ‘unprecedented’ development.

3. 12 Gujarat High Court Advocates Get 'Senior' Tag
Gujarat High Court during a full-court meeting designated 12 lawyers as senior advocates on Tuesday. A notification in this regard has been issued by registrar general HD Suthar.
The list includes assistant solicitor general Devang Vyas and public prosecutor Mitesh Amin. The other advocates, who got the seniority tag, include Satyajeet Desai, Jal Unwalla, Asim Pandya, Hasmukh Parikh, Bharatkumar Patel, Iqbal Syed, Maulin Raval, Gautam Joshi, Mahendrakumar Gandhi, and Tushar Hemani.
Seeking recognition of their superior ability, standing at the bar, and reputation among the legal fraternity, 32 advocates of the high court had in January applied before the high court administration for being designated as 'senior advocate'.

4. Scuffle Between Congress Leaders at Party Meet
A scuffle broke out between two senior Congress leaders at a party meet held in Ahmedabad, on Tuesday, 13 August, over taking command of the Radhanpur seat, following the recent resignation of rebel Congress leader Alpesh Thakore from the Vidhan Sabha.
The incident happened between Lalji Desai, president of All India Congress Seva Dal and Raghu Desai, General Secretary of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) at a meeting held at Rajiv Bhawan on Tuesday afternoon.
A senior Congress leader informed this newspaper that the scuffle broke out after the meet had ended and the two allegedly pushed each other and exchanged abuses outside the conference hall. “There was an old dispute between the two leaders and an argument broke out then,” said the leader.

5. City to Get More Speed Guns to Rein in Reckless Motorists
With an aim to curb the speed menace, Ahmedabad traffic cops to get 15 more speed guns to catch the overspeeding vehicles on the city roads. In this regard, Police Commissioner AK Singh has issued a notification on speed limits of vehicles on Monday, 12 August.
Gujarat Police in 2014 had purchased a total of 39-speed guns from a US-based company for Rs 3.9 cr. Of which only 5-speed guns were allotted to the traffic division of Ahmedabad Police department.
These five-speed guns were usually used on the outskirts of the city, like Narol, SG Highway, Sarkhej and Pirana to catch the over speeding vehicles.
Almost five years later, the traffic department of Ahmedabad police has decided to increase speed guns from 5 to 15 numbers and proposed to purchase them by the end of this year.
