1. Surat: 50-Year-Old Diamond Polisher Kills Self, Say Police
A 50-year-old diamond polisher who has been unemployed for the past six months allegedly hanged himself at his house in Surat on Friday, 18 October. Another diamond polisher facing a financial crisis had also allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Magan Dudhat, a resident of Arjun Nagar society in Punagam area of the city, was working as a diamond polisher in a private diamond company at Varachha. Six months ago, he was forced to leave the job by the firm owner without a reason, a family member of the deceased said.
As per preliminary investigation, Magan had been looking for another job but could not get one and suffered from depression. His wife Nita and two daughters, Twinkle (21), and Shivani (18), stitch lace onto sarees for a living, while his son Parth (14) studies in class 8 at a private school.

2. Gujarat-Cadre IPS Officer Anup Kumar Singh Is New NSG Chief
Senior IPS officer of Gujarat cadre Anup Kumar Singh has been appointed as director general of the National Security Guard (NSG), an official order said on Friday, 18 October.
The appointment of Singh, a 1985-batch IPS officer, as the DG of the 'black cats commando' force was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The post was lying vacant for over two months after the retirement of Sudeep Lakhtakia, a 1984-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Telangana cadre.
"The appointment (of Singh) will be from the date of joining the post and up to 30 September, 2020 i.e. date of his superannuation or till further orders, whichever is earlier," an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said.

3. Gujarat: CM Vijay Rupani to Visit Babur’s Birthplace on Uzbekistan Visit
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will depart Saturday, 19 October on a five-day tour of Uzbekistan to Andijan, the city where Zahir-ud-din Muhammad Babur, who laid the foundation of the Mughal empire in India, was born in 1483. Rupani is going there on an invitation from the Uzbekistan government to participate in an international forum, International Investment Forum – Open Andijan.
During his five-day visit, Rupani is scheduled to hold one-on-one meetings with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev along with governors of Andijan, Samarkand, & Bukhara regions of the country, as well as the mayor of Tashkent city.
An official release said that apart from participating in the inaugural ceremony of International Investment Forum, Rupani is also scheduled to unveil a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Andijan where a street has been named after India’s first home minister.

4.Caught in Snare, Lion Chokes to Death in Gujarat
A lion choked to death after getting caught in a snare put up by farmers near a village in Amreli taluka of Gujarat on Friday, 18 October officials said.
The incident took place in the morning on the outskirts of Mithapur-Dungri village in Dhari taluka, located close to the Gir forest, the last abode of Asiatic lions.
"As per the investigation carried out by the forest staff, a young lion, around two-and-a-half years old, died of strangulation after its neck got stuck in a snare trap put up by local farmers to catch pigs that destroy their standing crops," D T Vasavada, Chief Conservator of Forest, Wild Life Circle (Junagadh), said.

5. US-Based Fortune 500 Firm to Create 2,500 Jobs at SEZ Near Ahmedabad
US-based Fortune 500 firm Arrow Electronics will be setting up a unit at the IT/ITeS Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Ognaj near Ahmedabad which will employ 2,500 persons. The unit will be set up under the name e-Infochips Pvt Ltd, which the company had acquired last year.
An application for setting up the SEZ unit was processed and cleared by the Zonal Development Commissioner of Kandla Special Economic Zone (KASEZ), Ahmedabad on Friday. The company will initially take up 1,96,205 square feet of space at the SEZ developed by M/s Calica Construction & Impex Pvt Limited. This is the second firm from the United States to finalise setting up a unit in Gujarat in the past one month.
