1. 1,100 Arrested for Drinking Alcohol in South Gujarat During New Year

Over 1,100 people were arrested in South Gujarat alone for drinking alcohol during new year celebrations in districts of Surat, Navsari and Valsad. In Valsad alone over 967 persons were arrested by cops under the prohibition law.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Valsad, Sunil Joshi, all cases were registered from Monday night to Tuesday early morning. Of the 967 cases, 127 were arrested for drunk driving, 805 for drinking alcohol and the remaining were arrested for carrying alcohol.

In Surat 77 persons were arrested for drunken driving and another 70 were arrested for drinking in Piplod areas of the city, including seven women. Those arrested were later released on bail. Meanwhile 72 persons were arrested in Navsari.

2. PSI Commits Suicide: Family Seeks SIT Probe

Police Sub Inspector, Devendra Rathod, a trainee police sub inspector at the Gujarat Police Academy in Karai, Gandhinagar, allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a relative's revolver in Ahmedabad's Chandlodiya locality.

Rathod left two suicide notes wherein he has alleged mental harassment at the hands of DSP NP Patel, who runs the academy.On Tuesday the family of the deceased refused to accept his body and sought an independent enquiry against Patel.

The family has demanded a SIT probe and the suspension of Patel to prevent him from influencing the witness along with state honours for the PSI and a government job for the bereaved widow. Rathod was a gold medallist at the Karai Police Training Academy.

3. Family of Five Commit Suicide by Drinking Poison

Five members of a family, including two children, allegedly committed suicide by drinking pesticide at their residence in Jamnagar over a financial issue. According to police, Deepak Sakariya (45), who used to run a sweetmeat shop, was under financial stress due to cost of medical treatment of his old mother.

Besides Deepak Sakariya, other deceased are identified as his wife Arti Sakariya (42), their daughter Kumkum (10), son Hemant (5) and Deepak's mother Jaya Pannala (80). Deepak’s father Pannalal who was asleep upstairs during the night came downstairs at around 10:30 am on Tuesday and found the five dead on the ground floor.

As per Deepak Sakariya's relatives, he was under financial stress due to the treatment cost and repayment of loan, Singhal said. A few days back, Deepak had told one of his relatives that he was under pressure and wanted to end his life.

4. Ishrat Jahan Encounter: Govt Promotes Cop Accused to IGP Rank

On Tuesday the Gujarat Government promoted G L Singhal, one of the seven IPS officers chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Ishrat Jahan case to the rank of inspector general from deputy inspector general of the Commando Training Centre in Gandhinagar.

Vipul Aggarwal, who was recently discharged by the Bombay High Court in connection with the Sohrabuddin Shaikh alleged fake encounter case, has also been promoted to IGP rank. Singhal was arrested in February 2013 in connection with the Ishrat Jahan case.

He was granted bail by a CBI court, following which the state government had reinstated him in May 2014 as the superintendent of police of the State Crime Records Bureau. Aggarwal was reinstated in November 2014 after being granted bail in the alleged fake-encounter killings of gangster Sohrabuddin Shaikh, his wife, Kausar Bi, and his aide, Tulsi Prajapati.

5. Newly-Elected BJP MLA Bavaliya Takes Oath

Newly elected Jasdan MLA Kunvarji Bavaliya on Tuesday took oath as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Bavaliya was administered the oath by Speaker Rajendra Trivedi in his office at Gujarat Assembly building in Gandhinagar.

Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama was present along with other BJP leaders during the oath taking ceremony. Bavaliya recently defeated Congress candidate Avsar Nakiya in Jasdan Assembly bypoll by over 19,000 votes.

He had yesterday met prime minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, where the latter congratulated him. "I will accept any responsibility given to me by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah regarding the 2019 elections," Bavaliya told reporters after taking oath.
