The 68-year-old Lieutenant General of Puducherry startled everyone when she jumped over a fence at the government hospital in Karaikal. On 26 October, Kiran Bedi visited the hospital to inspect a statue of ‘Our Lady of Lourdes’.
However, the statue was kept in a shed encircled by a 3.5-foot-high brick fence, and the hospital officials had misplaced their keys.
Bedi, the first woman to have joined the Indian Police Service (IPS), waited for a while. But then, she decided to jump over the fence, leaving Karaikal District Collector R Kesavan, Senior Superintendent of Police V J Chandran and other officials present on the occasion with no choice but to follow suit.

Bedi’s five-day field trip to Karaikal, an enclave of the union territory, was aimed at observing and monitoring the civic amenities in the area. On the fourth day of her field trip, the Lieutenant General visited the government hospital there to review the facilities and interact with the patients.
