Policeman Taar Babu has been suspended for humiliating a woman who had come to lodge a molestation complaint at Nazirabad police station in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on Monday, 22 July. The video of the incident has gone viral over the Internet.
In the video, the girl is seen trying to file her complaint. Talking to the officer, she said, “I was collecting water when Amar Tiwari molested me. My brother saw this and in the next moment, they started fighting. Amid all this, Tiwari called his family, and they started beating my brother too. Some more goons joined as well."
Instead of paying attention to her ordeal, the police officer can be heard shaming the victim for wearing ornaments while going out.
He replied, “Why are you wearing all these rings, bangles and locket? All this is enough to show what you really are.”
He even lashed out at her family saying, “Does your family not say anything to you?”
‘He Was Immediately Suspended’
Speaking to The Quint, Constable Vikram of Nazirabad police station said, “It is not as big a deal as it is being made out to be. Action was immediately taken and the Head Constable was suspended on the same day. As the investigation is underway, we don’t know the definite term period of suspension.”
Vikram added, “We also filed the girl’s molestation complaint on the same day, and we have begun with our investigation in the concerned matter.”
Mohit Agarwal, Inspector-General of police, told The Quint, “Kanpur police condemns the attack. It shouldn’t have happened and the police is actively looking into the complaint against him.”
Ravina Tyagi, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kanpur South, corroborated the news of his suspension and stressed that when any female comes with a molestation complaint similar to the one in question, the police is bound to have a sensitive and respectful approach in the matter.
“We also have soft-skill training from time to time to sensitise the officers in dealing with such cases,” said Tyagi.
Listen to Women: Priyanka Gandhi
Priyanka Gandhi, General Secretary of Eastern Uttar Pradesh took to Twitter and expressed her resentment against the incident and the law and order situation in the state.
She wrote, “This is the kind of behaviour meted out to a girl who came to file a complaint in the police station. On one hand, crime against women are not decreasing, and on the other, the guardians of law and order are behaving in this manner. The first step to providing justice to women is to just listen to them.”
Following Priyanka's tweet, the girl while speaking to ANI, said, "I am glad that Priyanka Gandhi chose to speak about this. I would love to meet her if she wants to."
