An FIR was registered against six people, including managing director of a company operating an amusement park in Ahmedabad, a day after two persons were killed and 27 injured when a joyride collapsed on Sunday, 14 July.
The incident occurred at Kankaria Lake in the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad (East).
A video posted by a Twitter user showed how the accident took place.
As per the FIR, six people – Super Star Amusement Private Limited's managing director Ghanshyam Patel, his son Bhavesh Patel, manager Rajesh Chowksi, ride operators Yash Patel and Kishan Mohanti and helper Manish Vaghela – have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, PTI quoted an official as saying.
The injured were taken to LG Hospital for treatment.
Speaking to the media, the commissioner of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said, “A team from the FSL and Ahmedabad Police have started probe. The injured are being treated in the hospital.”
Additional Chief Fire Officer of Ahmedabad Rajesh Bhatt told The Quint, “Our priority was to save the injured and sent to hospital. Primary investigation suggests that heavy-duty bolts became loose, resulting in the ride malfunctioning. The ride dropped from at least 20 feet and revellers sitting on the impact side sustained severe injuries while others have sustained minor injuries.”
According to sources in the police department, the ride became operational in 2015 and regular maintenance work was duly carried out. Yet, the accident happened. The ride had the capacity to carry 32 persons.
When the accident occurred, 29 persons were seated on the ride – two died and 27 are reported to be injured. Most of the riders were women and children.
CM Rupani Orders Immediate Inquiry
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, meanwhile, has ordered a strict action against those responsible for the accident and has asked the authorities concerned to conduct safety checks of such rides before allowing them to operate.
