A man who was convicted of rape, was lynched by a group of people, following his release on bail. The group of people, attacked the victim, Ratan Lohar, after reportedly opposing his visit to a slum at Adityapur in Seraikela-Kharswan, Jharkhand on Friday, 2 March.

Ratan Lohar, the victim, had served a few years of his sentence in prison before being released on bail. At least half a dozen other criminal cases were pending against him at the time of his release.

“Lohar went to the slums in Ram Madaiya, where he had reportedly caused trouble in the past as well. This angered local residents, who told him to leave the area,” Sub-divisional Police Officer (Seraikela), Avinash Kumar said.

Following an altercation, Lohar threatened them with a gun, but by that time more people assembled at the spot, police added.

Sensing danger, the convicted man fled and reached the roof of a building, but the irate people followed him and beat him up, police said.

On being informed, a police team reached the slum and took him to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Kumar said policemen were deployed in the area.

(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
