The nearly 48-hour-long gunbattle in Kupwara's Halmatpora area in north Kashmir ended on the night of Wednesday, 21 March, with a death toll of 10, which included three Army jawans, two policemen and five militants, the police said.

“The operation is at controlling stage, searches are underway at some places. We have recovered arms and ammunition in large quantities. All those killed are foreign terrorists. Prima facie it appears they are related to the terrorist group LeT”, IGP SP Pani said.

Four unidentified militants were killed by the security forces on 20 March, on Tuesday. The next day, on Wednesday, the body of another terrorist was recovered during search operations, taking the number of terrorists killed to five.

"Four militants have been killed in the Arampora operation in Kupwara district", a defence spokesperson had earlier said in Srinagar.

The encounter broke out in Arampora after militants opened fire on an army patrol, an army official said. He said the soldiers reacted swiftly and launched an operation to track down the militants.

"Around 3:30 pm, a gun battle broke out between the militants and security forces", he said.
