The winners of 2016 Pulitzer Prize, American journalism’s top honour, are out and India-American woman journalist was among one of the winners.
According to the Business Insider report, Sanghamitra Kalita, the Managing Editor of Los Angeles (LA) Times was the part of the team which won the Pulitzer in the Breaking News reporting category.
With this win, the LA Times now are the most frequent winner in the Breaking News Coverage with three mentions. This win also marked the newspaper’s 44th Pulitzer.
Sanghamitra was born in Brooklyn to Assamese parents and was raised in Long Island, Puerto Rico and New Jersey.
The 39-year-old journalist took over as the LA Times’ Managing Editor for Editorial Strategy in March 2015. Sanghamitra was given the responsibility to re-model the newsroom for the news Los Angeles market.
Sanghamitra and her team bagged the award for the coverage of San Bernardino shooting and the terror investigation that followed.
Before LA times, Sanghamitra was associated with Quartz as Executive Editor – overseeing the section that produced ‘the most popular pieces and redefined commentary for a digital age.’ She was also the force behind Quartz’s launch in Africa and India.
She also worked at the Wall Street Journal from 2008 to 2012 where she directed coverage of the Great Recession, reporting on the housing crisis as a senior writer and launching a local news section for New York City.
Sanghmitra’s stint in India includes her role as founding editor for Mint, which is one of India’s biggest business newspaper at present.
Apart from being associated to the news organisations, Sanghamitra has also served as the President of the South Asian Journalists Associating in the past and has won numerous journalism awards, besides finding a place in Folio’s Top 100 Women in Media.
