India Reports 6,987 New COVID-19 Cases & 162 Deaths, Omicron Cases Rise to 422

India also reported a total of 162 deaths on Sunday.

India, on Sunday, 26 December, recorded 6,987 new COVID-19 cases and 7,091 recoveries in the last 24 hours, data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) showed.

India also reported a total of 162 deaths on Sunday. The number of active cases on Sunday were 76,766.

Meanwhile, India's Omicron cases have increased to 422, as per the MoHFW. Of those, the number of people who have recovered is 130.

The total vaccine doses administered as of Sunday had reached 141.37 crore.

Keeping the evolving Omicron situation in mind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Saturday, 25 December, and declared that children aged 15-18 can now avail the COVID-19 vaccine, beginning 3 January.

Further, he announced that healthcare and frontline workers would be able to avail the booster dose of the vaccine from 10 January.

Mumbai reported 922 new cases, 2 deaths and 326 recoveries in the last 24 hours, taking the active caseload at 4,295.

Wales, Northern Ireland & Scotland Impose Stricter Curbs; England PM to Hold Review Meeting on Monday

Amidst the surge in COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom, tougher restrictions have been implemented in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, PTI reported.

In Wales and Northern Ireland, nightclubs have been shut down. A maximum of six people will be allowed to meet in pubs, restaurants and cinemas in Wales.

In Scotland, nightclubs will be forced to close for three weeks from Monday and number of people in indoor and outdoor events has also been capped.

In England, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to review the latest data and take advice from experts on Monday, to decide if further restrictions need to be brought in.

As per a health official, 51 people have tested covid-19 positive in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, out of which 48 are students, PTI reported.
