1. VHP Leader Shot Dead on Way to Court, Probe On

A Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) office-bearer, Om Mishra, 36, who was also a lawyer, was shot dead by unidentified persons while he was on way to the district court in Pratapgarh on Monday, 16 July. Mishra suffered three gunshot injuries.

Mishra’s family members, lawyers and VHP and BJP workers staged a protest, demanding arrest of the culprits, a job for the wife of the deceased and a compensation of Rs 25 lakh. The protest was called after senior officials promised them of taking action in the case.

According to police, on Monday morning, Mishra, accompanied by another person, was headed to the court on his motorcycle. He had reached Jaithra area when two youths came from the opposite direction riding a motorcycle. They asked Mishra to stop and one of them opened fire on him, the police said.

2. Man Arrested for Harassing Bengali Actress On Social Media

A person has been arrested for allegedly threatening and abusing a Bengali actress on social media, a senior police officer said on Monday, 16 July.

Acting on the complaint lodged by Arunima Ghosh, police arrested Mukesh Shaw, a resident of Garfa area in south Kolkata, late Sunday night, the officer said.

"The accused has been posting illicit comments, threats and abuses on a social networking account of the actress since 30 May," he said.

3. Jharkhand Lynching Video on TikTok: Mumbai Police Oppose Anticipatory Bail to 3 Accused

Mumbai Police has opposed anticipatory bail plea of three men accused of uploading an ‘objectionable’ video on mobile app, Tik Tok, following a lynching incident in Jharkhand last month, claiming that their act was ‘negligent’ and could lead to a law and order situation.

In its reply, filed on 16 July, the Cyber police station submitted that their probe, so far, had shown that one of the accused had uploaded the video on his Tik Tok account, while the two others had shared it on their individual accounts.

Hasnain Khan (21), Mudassir Shaikh (23) and Shadan Farooqui (23) have been booked under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code.

4. Woman Killed, 4 Injured After Bus Hits Other Vehicles in Central Delhi

A woman was killed and four men were injured after a speeding cluster bus crashed into two auto-rickshaws and one e-rickshaw in central Delhi's Anand Parbat area on 16 July, police said.

The accident happened around 8.30 am in front of MCD North Zone's office after the bus driver lost control over the wheels, they said.

The bus coming from Nand Nagri had dropped all passengers and was returning to Anand Parbat bus stand, when its driver, Joginder Singh (48), allegedly rammed it into the vehicles and crushed a 65-year-old woman, Bhaggo Devi, to death, a senior police officer said.

The woman was returning home after purchasing milk, the officer said.

5. SIT Detains Congress MLA Roshan Baig in IMA Jewels Ponzi Scam

The special investigation team probing the multi-crore IMA Jewels ponzi scam detained Congress MLA Roshan Baig when he was about to board a chartered plane from the Bengaluru international airport, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said Monday. The CM alleged that BJP state chief B S Yeddyurappa’s personal assistant Santhosh was along with Baig when he was leaving.

“Today SIT probing the IMA case detained R Roshan Baig for questioning at the BIAL airport while he was trying to leave along with BS Yeddyurappa’s PA Santosh on a chartered flight to Mumbai,” Kumaraswamy tweeted.

He added that on seeing the SIT, Santhosh ran away while the team apprehended Baig.

6. Delhi: IndiGo Pilot Robbed by Men Who Offered Him Ride at IGI Airport

Four men allegedly robbed Rs 1.3 lakh from a 60-year-old Canadian citizen who works with IndiGo airlines as a pilot after offering him a lift in a taxi at Terminal-1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport.

This is the first time the pilot, Mohammad Mehdu Ghanzanfani, had come to T-1. He was looking for a cab, which had already been booked by his company, but was not familiar with the airport.

DCP (Airport) Sanjay Bhatia said the incident took place on the night of July 12. “Unable to trace his cab, the pilot walked a few metres and arrived at gate number 2 of a Metro station near Delhi Cantonment area,” DCP (IGI Airport) Sanjay Bhatia said.

7. Rs 55,000 Stolen from Gurugram Shopkeeper at Gunpoint

Three armed men allegedly robbed a shopkeeper at gunpoint in Wazirpur village, Farrukhnagar, on Monday afternoon. The police said the assailants stole Rs 55,000 cash, a gold chain and the shopkeeper’s mobile phone.

According to the complainant, Hiralal, a resident of ward number 10, Farrukhnagar, who owns an organic material and fodder shop on the Wazirpur main road, the incident took place around 2.45pm.

In the FIR, he said, “I was at the shop when three armed men entered my shop and started threatening me. They asked me to handover the cash from the cash box. They stole Rs 55,000 cash and my gold chain. They also took my mobile phone,” he said.

8. Gang Opens Fire in Navi Mumbai Eatery to Kill Contractor; Police Detain Two

A gang of criminals allegedly fired four rounds and tried to kill a 28-year-old contractor from Rabale at a restaurant in Airoli, on Sunday, 15 July. Contractor Aditya Kshirsagar and a friend were targeted twice by armed men, but escaped unhurt.

Rabale police have identified two of the shooters and have detained two others. The police have registered a first information report, charging the two alleged shooters and 11 other members of the gang with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as well as sections of the Indian Arms Act.

According to the police, Kshirsagar and a friend went to a restaurant in Airoli around 11pm on Sunday night. They had gone up to sit on the first floor when a group of men suspected to be criminals opened fire on them. At the time, the restaurant was full of customers, the police said.

9. Mumbai Woman Loses Rs 7 Lakh to Friend Who Sent ‘Gifts’

A 28-year-old Kurla-based woman lost Rs 7 lakh to an unidentified man claiming to be from the United States who befriended her on a social networking website. The man told the woman he had sent her expensive gifts from the US, for which she was asked to pay customs duties to be cleared by the customs department in New Delhi. The Vinobha Bhave Nagar police have booked unidentified people in connection with the fraud.

The woman works in a private firm and lives in Kurla (West). According to police officials, she came in contact with one Mark Philippe in February. Philippe told her he is a US national and the two started chatting on a photo-sharing application.
