1. Pune Businessman and RTI Applicant Murdered; Two Arrested
A local businessman associated with the city unit of Republican Party of India (A) was found murdered on Monday night, 11 February, at Tamhini ghat, 12 days after he went missing. The Pune police crime branch cracked the case within hours and arrested two men, while the third, who was known to the victim according to the officials, is still at large.
The deceased, Vinayak Shirsath, a resident of Shivane area of Pune, had filed multiple applications under Right to Information (RTI) with various authorities, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). He sought details on alleged illegal constructions in Ambegaon and Narhe, according to a senior police official.

2. After Cabs, Thieves in Gurugram Now Targeting Shared Autos
A man was allegedly robbed of Rs 2,000 by four people after being offered a shared ride in an auto rickshaw from Rajiv Chowk in Gurugram, the police said on Tuesday, 12 February. This is the second case in February in which criminals have used an auto rickshaw to offer shared rides and rob a passenger. There have been at least nine such cases involving cabs and auto rickshaws in Gurugram this year so far.
The victim, Vijay, in his late 20s, was taken to a lane behind the Civil Hospital and robbed, said Chander Prakash, station house officer(sho), Civil Lines police station. An FIR was registered at the Civil Lines police station under section 379A (snatching) of the Indian Penal CODE(IPC). No arrests have been made so far.

3. Ludhiana Gangrape: Two Accused Arrested, 3 Others Identified
Two days after a 21-year-old student was gang raped at Issewal, 25 km from Ludhiana, the Mullanpur Dhaka police on Tuesday, 12 February, arrested two persons and identified three others.
Sadiq Ali, 24, a Gujjar, of Rehpa village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), was arrested from his house. Later in the day, police arrested Jagroop Singh of Jaspal Bangar village in Ludhiana.
The other accused are Ajay and Saif Ali of Tibba and Surmu of Khanpur village of Ludhiana. Sadiq is married and was in Ludhiana to meet his relatives Saif Ali and Surmu. All are in the age group of 25-30, said the police.

4. Uttar Pradesh: Woman Shot Dead Five Days After She Got ‘Triple Talaq’ Over Phone
Five days after she was reportedly given triple talaq over phone by her Dubai-based husband, a 30-year-old woman was shot dead while she was returning home on a tempo in Shahaganj area of Jaunpur district on Tuesday, 12 February. Mohammad Mannan, husband of the woman Irfana, is working as a labourer in Dubai.
An FIR has been lodged against Mannan’s elder brother Danish and younger brother Mustakeem on murder charges at the Shahaganj police station on a complaint by the victim’s brother, Abu Zar of Azamgarh. No arrest has been made so far.

5. Multi-Crore Drug Racket Case: Punjab Ex-DSP Jagdish Bhola Gets 12 Years in Jail
A special CBI court in Mohali on Wednesday, 13 February, sentenced former Punjab Police DSP Jagdish Bhola to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment in a multi-crore drugs smuggling case. CBI Judge NS Gill pronounced his verdict in seven FIRs registered against 54 accused in the case. Out of these 54 accused, 23, including Bhola, were held guilty of various charges, while 31 were acquitted.
In 2013, six FIRs were filed against Bhola under the NDPS Act in Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali. On Wednesday, the Arjuna Award-winning international wrestler was acquitted in three cases, while being sentenced to 12 years in jail in three others. These included 12 years jail in one case, 10 in another and two years in jail in the third case. All the three sentences will run concurrently, said the court.

6. Gujarat: Army Jawan Killed Wife, Twins in 2016, Arrested for Kidnapping
An Army jawan was on Tuesday, 12 February, arrested on charges of kidnapping his wife and five-day-old twins in 2016. The three were found dead on Wednesday, 13 February, and police recovered their skeletal remains from the backyard of the jawan’s house in Bhilapur in Chhota Udepur.
The Army jawan had allegedly killed and buried the bodies of the three.
According to police, Shakuntala Rathwa, a resident of Umarva village of Pavi Jetpur taluka in Chhota Udepur had married Vikram Rathwa against the wishes of her parents five years ago.

7. Odisha Couple, Suspected to Have an Affair, Killed in Sleep: Police
The bodies of a man and woman, suspected to be lovers, were recovered on Tuesday, 12 February, from a house at Ranipatna area of Odisha's Balasore town, police said.
The two could have been bludgeoned to death with an iron rod in their sleep last night, said Subhransu Nayak, Inspector in Charge of Sahadevkhunta Police Station.
The police, aided by a forensic team, are on the spot and inquiry is on, he said adding that the motive and other details can be known only after the investigation got over.
Kailash Chandra Sahu, the husband of the deceased woman Laxmipriya Sahu (32), has been detained for questioning, police said.
The deceased man was identified as Pradip Kumar Dey (45) of Durgadevi village under Remuna police station.

8. Kerala Cop Booked for Trying to Sexually Assault 17-Year-Old Girl in Train
A manhunt is on to trace a police officer who allegedly attempted to sexually assault a 17-year-old girl on a moving train in Kerala, railway police said on Wednesday, 13 February.
The accused, identified as Dinshad, an officer under the Vigilance department of the state police, has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act based on the complaint of the girl, they said.
As per the complaint, the 38-year-old accused had tried to sexually harass her near Sasthamkotta while travelling in a Thiruvananthapuram-bound train two weeks ago, the police said.

9. Indore Man Bites Man Multiple Times for Stopping Him From Thrashing Dog Mercilessly
A man was bitten multiple times by another man after he berated the latter for thrashing a dog, police said on Wednesday, 13 February.
The victim, Ravi Chauhan, saw the alleged assailant Babbi beating the dog mercilessly with a pipe in the Sanjay Nagar locality Monday night, police said.
Out of compassion for the canine, Chauhan tried to stop Babbi from tormenting the dog, Rajendra Nagar Inspector Sunil Verma said.
Furious over this interference, Babbi knocked Chauhan down and bit him multiple times, the police official said.
