1. Aarushi Murder Case: Hemraj's Wife Moves SC Challenging Talwars' Acquittal

The acquittal of dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the 2008 twin murder case of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

The plea, filed by Hemraj's wife, is the first petition in the top court against the Allahabad High Court verdict of 12 October this year, acquitting the couple. The high court had freed them of the charges on the ground that they could not be held guilty on the basis of the evidence on record.

Fourteen-year-old Aarushi was found dead inside her room in the Talwars' Noida residence with her throat slit in May 2008. The needle of suspicion had initially moved towards 45- year-old Hemraj, who had gone missing but his body was recovered from the terrace of the house two days later.

2. Nirbhaya Gangrape: Two Death Row Convicts File Review Plea in SC

Two of the four death row convicts in the 16 December 2012 gangrape and murder case on Friday moved the Supreme Court for review of its verdict upholding the capital punishment awarded to them.

The review petition by convicts Vinay Sharma and Pawan Kumar Gupta came after the apex court on 12 December completed the hearing on the review plea filed by another death row convict, Mukesh.

A 23-year-old paramedic student was gangraped on the intervening night of 16017 December 2012 inside a moving bus in South Delhi by a gang of six persons and severely injured before being thrown out naked. She succumbed to her injuries on 29 December 2012 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

3. Ryan School Murder: Bail Plea of Teenage Accused Rejected

The Juvenile Justice Board on Friday rejected the bail plea of a teenager accused of killing seven-year-old Pradyumn Thakur on the premises of Ryan International School. The board, however, reserved its decision till 20 December on whether the accused should be tried as an adult or as a juvenile.

The board had earlier set up a committee comprising a psychologist from PGI Rohtak seeking an expert opinion in the matter. The panel submitted its report in two envelops which were opened inside the court room today.

Lawyer of Pradyumn's father, Sushil Tekriwal, said the report was based on behavioural, sociological and psychological aspects of the juvenile. "We have seen the report and given our submission," he said.

According to Tekriwal, the report said the accused should be treated as an adult and it suggested that he was an abnormal child with a hyper-aggressive streak to his personality.

4. SC Rejects Teesta Plea for De-Freezing Accounts

The Supreme Court on Friday held that activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband owe an explanation to Gujarat Police for alleged misappropriation of "huge funds" received by their NGOs for the victims of the 2002 riots.

The apex court, which dismissed their pleas challenging the Gujarat High Court order rejecting defreezing of their personal bank accounts, said the investigations against them and their NGOs – Sabrang Trust and Citizens for Justice and Peace – were still in progress and there were allegation of non-cooperation by them in the probe which strengthens suspicion against them.

It said police was in possession of materials pointing out circumstances which create "suspicion of the commission" of offences of cheating, breach of trust, forgery and criminal conspiracy.

5. Court Rejects Anticipatory Bail of Activist Aires Rodrigues

A local court on Friday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of social activist Aires Rodrigues, who has been booked on charges of sexually harassing and outraging the modesty of a woman.

However, Principal District and Sessions Judge Irshad Agha directed that the crime branch should give a 48-hour written notice in advance to Rodrigues in case of his arrest.

A married woman had filed case against Rodrigues on 27 November accusing him of outraging her modesty, sexually harassing her and defaming her in public through his Facebook posts which had linked her with a Goa minister.

The crime branch while opposing the anticipatory bail plea said they wanted to recover some material which was in possession of Rodrigues.

6. Pune Woman Raped by Rickshaw Driver and His Friend

A 23-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a rickshaw driver and his friend in Kondhwa area of Pune. The incident took place on Wednesday night.

Based on the woman's complaint, Kondhwa police arrested the rickshaw driver, Balaji Maruti Shinde (31), and his friend, Satish Jaypal Mane (23). The alleged incident took place after the woman boarded Shinde's rickshaw from Kondhwa's NIBM Road area.

On the night of the alleged crime, the woman had gone to Kondhwa to meet her ex-husband following a fight with her younger brother, a senior police officer said.

"After she failed to meet her husband, she took a rickshaw. In her statement, the woman claimed that Shinde called Mane and informed him that she was alone in the rickshaw. Soon, Mane reached the spot and took her to Siddharth Nagar area, where he raped her," the officer said.

"The woman also said that after Mane, Shinde took her to Hadapsar area, where he raped her. After sexually assaulting her, they called their friend, who molested her in the rickshaw before dropping her near Camp area early on Thursday," the officer said.

7. UP Girl’s Murder: Family Stage Protest Before Cremation

Family members of an 18-year -old girl, who was hacked to death by a jilted lover, staged a protest in their village before cremating her, police said. The spurned lover, Amarpal, had on Wednesday killed the Class 12 student using a sickle at Ghar Shayam village in the Kandhla police station area of Shamli district.

Three other people were with Amarpal when he attacked the girl. Tensions prevailed in the village as the girl and the accused belonged to different communities, police said.

On Friday, when her body was handed over to the family after post mortem, they refused to cremate it till all the accused were arrested and stern action was taken against them, Circle Officer Rajesh Tiwari said.

Sub Divisional Magistrate Vinod Kumar rushed to the spot and pacified the family by promising strict action against the accused and monetary help. Tiwari said Amarpal had been arrested and weapon used in the crime seized.

8. BSES Labour Supervisor Held for Stealing Cable Worth Rs 10 lakh

A 37-year-old BSES labour supervisor was arrested for allegedly stealing cable worth Rs 10 lakh from a metro site in Jamia Nagar, the police said today.

On December 5, BSES contractor Karan Sharma approached the police with a complaint about theft of a wooden drum containing 492 metres of cable weighing 4,400 kg from an underconstruction Jamia Milia University metro station site, they added.

During investigation, the police analysed the CCTV footages from the site. In one of the CCTV footages, a hydra crane and a tempo were seen passing in front of Holy Family hospital in the night.

The police team traced the crane and the owner revealed that it was hired by a BSES employee for lifting the heavy cable wire roll, said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast).

Yesterday, the police nabbed one Ashwani Kumar alias Bablu, a BSES contractual labour supervisor in connection with the theft, said the officer.

He tried to sell the stolen cable to three-four junk dealers in Okhla and Badarpur but since it was government property they all refused to buy it, he added.

9. Salesman Killed in Accidental Shooting

A liquor salesman died after he was critically injured when a was hit by a bullet that was accidentally fired, police said. DSP Greater Noida Amit Kishore Srivastava said that last night salesman Anant suffered a bullet injury and was admitted at the Kailash hospital.

He died during the treatment and his brother Anil lodged a murder case.

"Investigations showed that the deceased and two other salesmen Deepak and Palmal were preparing to have dinner in the shop last night. They downed the shutter. They had a country-made pistol and were playing with it. Accidentally, the pistol, when in the hands of one of the salesmen, got fired and a bullet hit Anant's chest," the police official said.

Then two salesmen got him admitted him to the Kailash hospital.

"When police interrogated Deepak, he confessed that the bullet was accidentally fired and killed Anant. He has been arrested," Srivastava said.
