1. Contract Worker Lynched for Alleged Theft in UP, Three Arrested

Three persons were arrested on Sunday for allegedly lynching a 47-year-old man on the suspicion of theft at Mawana town in Meerut. The attack took place at 11 pm on Friday when the man, Ranveer Singh, was returning home from a sugar mill where he worked as a contract worker. A mob waylaid him in Kalyan Singh colony and beat him up suspecting that he was behind a string of thefts in the area, according to the FIR.

Singh was left unconscious, but somehow managed to reach home at Dhikauli colony and vomited blood before succumbing to his injuries while being taken to a hospital on Saturday, said police. “The mob alleged that Singh was responsible for a recent spurt in theft cases,” said brother Ranveer Singh’s brother Bhupendra Singh (42), who filed a police complaint in which he named five people and a dozen unidentified people.

2. 23-Year-Old Slits Father's Throat, Stabs Mother in Delhi

A 23-year-old man attacked his parents and fled after slitting his father's throat and stabbing his mother on Friday evening. The couple is recuperating from the attack.

DCP (outer-north) Gaurav Sharma said that a case of attempt to murder has been registered against the victims' son, Sanjeev, who is still at large.

3. Woman, Two Sons Get Life Term for Killing Teen Girl in UP

A local court in Kanpur has awarded life imprisonment to a woman and her two sons for the murder of a 17-year-old girl in 2003. According to prosecution, the victim, Rachna, was staying with her mother, two sisters and a brother on rent at the accused’s residence at Barra area of the city.

Rachna was killed because her family refused to vacate the rented house, said government counsel Jitendra Pandey. Another reason was her denial to marry one of the sons of the accused woman.

4. Four Men Arrested With 54 Kgs of Marijuana in Gurugram

Four men were arrested on Saturday for allegedly trying to peddle 54 kilograms of marijuana near HSVP market in Sector 46. The police said that two of the men procured marijuana from Odisha and came to the city in a truck.

The suspects were identified as Govind from Bharatpur, Rajasthan; Sonu from Jal Vihar Colony, Sector 46; Jhagla Sahu and Ramakanth Pradan, both from Odisha. The men were arrested from HSVP market after the police received a tip-off. The police have confiscated a truck, a motorcycle and around 54 kilograms of marijuana.

5. Youth Shoots Self in Bid to Grab Landlord's House in Delhi

The cops from Amar Colony police station rushed to Safdarjung hospital around 5 pm on 22 August, after being informed that a 22-year-old youth had been shot twice by his landlord in an argument over rent. After recording the statement of the injured youth, Sunit Bhadana, police detained the landlord, Varun Juneja.

Bhadana claimed that he had rented Juneja's house to run a paying guest facility. He had not paid rent for a few months and owed Rs 2.25 lakh to Juneja.This escalated into arguments between them, which often turned violent.

6. Vegetable Vendor Shot Dead in Front of Six-Year-Old Son in Delhi

Two unidentified men shot a vegetable trader dead in front of his six-year-old son outside the Okhla Sabzi Mandi on Friday, police said.

The 36-year-old victim, Mohammad Fazlu, was riding a scooter with his son when he was shot at. “The boy was injured too after falling from the scooter but his injuries are not fatal and is being treated at AIIMS,” a senior police officer said.

7. IIM-A Student Held on Molestation Charge, Gets Bail

A 28-year-old student of IIM, Ahmedabad, was arrested after a 27-year-old student of the same institute accused him of molesting her. The man was later released on bail.

On 22 August, the woman filed a police complaint saying she was groped and molested by the man when they were watching a movie at a multiplex in Vastrapur on 10 August night. Following the complaint, the police lodged an FIR against the man under IPC Section 354 for assault on woman and arrested him.

8. 22 Teachers Found Working With Fake Certificates in Bihar, FIR Ordered

East Champaran district education department ordered the registration of cases against 22 contractual teachers, posted in different blocks of East Champaran, after it was found that the teachers had been working with forged documents.

The development came barely a few days after cases were registered against four teachers, identified as Ranjani Ranjan Shrivastava, posted at Middle school Chailaha; Manish Kumar, posted at Kukurajari; Binod Kumar, posted at Ajgarawa and Lokesh Kumar, posted at Semarahiya, in Banjariya block of East Champaran.

9. Dressed as a Priest in UP, Murder Accused Kept Dodging Arrest for Over 35 Years

For over 35 years, Shesh Narain Shastri, now 55 years old, kept dodging arrest. Accused of killing his neighbour in Majra village of Unnao district in 1982 when he was 20 years old, Shastri jumped bail a year later and managed to hoodwink police all these years till his cellphone gave away his location to police.

According to police, Shastri used to dress as a priest and regularly changed his locations as well as his mobile numbers, making it therefore very difficult to track him. “No one could give any specific information about Shesh Narain Shastri as he regularly changed his locations and also his cellphone numbers,” said Station House Officer, Ajgain Police Station, Ajay Raj Verma.
