The idea for a separate state of Gujarat was first suggested in 1928 in a magazine called Kumar. The idea also popped up in a meeting of the Gujarat Sahitya Sabha which was held in Karachi in the year 1937.

Years later, Gujarat finally received the status of a state in 1960, the same day Maharashtra was also formed. Thus, Both the states on this day celebrate their statehood. One of the first depictions of Gujarat was made by Devshavji Parmar in a poem titled 'Uthtrishta Jagrat'.

These two separate states were born because The States Reorganisation Act, 1956, defined boundaries for India’s states on the basis of the languages that are primarily spoken.

The Bombay State formed under this act was inhabited by Marathi,Gujarati, Kutchi and Konkani-speaking people. The Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti wanted the Bombay State to be divided into two states — one where people primarily spoke Gujarati and Kutchhi and the other where people primarily spoke Marathi and Konkani.
