The trial court in Ahmedabad will hear final arguments in the 2002 Gulberg society riot case from June 8.
Sixty-nine people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, were killed when a mob went on a rampage at the Gulberg Housing Society. The incident took place on February 28, 2002, a day after the Godhra train burning incident.
Special judge P B Desai, who has been hearing the case on a daily basis, posted the final arguments for June 8. This is one of the nine cases of the 2002 Gujarat riots probed by the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The Supreme Court division bench headed by Chief justice H L Dattu directed the SIT to finish the trial at the earliest.
The apex court also said that the judgement should not be pronounced without its permission. SIT has named 66 accused in the case. Nine of them have been in jail for the last 14 years.
