Following Hardik Patel’s arrest in a police crackdown on the Patel rally demanding the community to be recognised under the OBC category, protesters turned violent.

Owing to the rising tension in Gujarat, Section 144 was imposed in Kapodra and Sarthana Police station areas and a curfew has also been imposed in the Mahsena and Surat districts.

Ahmedabad and Surat remained tense with incidents of arson and stone-pelting reported after Hardik Patel, was detained by the police late on Tuesday. Patel, who was released less than an hour later, has called for a statewide bandh on Wednesday.

Ahmedabad Ablaze

Escalated levels of violence were reported from Ahmedabad, where protestors torched vehicles and buildings.

A bus was also set ablaze by protestors.

Amid reports of clashes, Hardik Patel has reportedly called for a Gujarat Bandh on August 26. 

Surat also witnessed sporadic cases of arson and vandalism as protestors took to the streets.

Other than Ahmedabad, Rajkot too witnessed a rise in tensions.
