1. Ganesh Mandals Fined Rs 12 Lakh for Leaving a Trail of Potholes

The Ganesh mandals of Parel area have been fined Rs 12 lakh by the BMC for causing potholes on roads. The civic body has found hundreds of potholes in this area alone.

Every year, the BMC undertakes large-scale road repairs before Ganesh festival. This year too, repairs were undertaken and 20 per cent of the civic body’s imported pothole mix was reserved for filling pits dug up for the Ganpati festival.

Year after year, the Ganesh Mandals create potholes on roads year after year. According to rules, every mandal is supposed to keep its roads or footpaths in a good shape. The mandals are expected to fill potholes themselves.

The pits are created while erecting pandals.

2. Unsafe Schools: Did a Mumbai School Trustee Rape Minors?

As the brutal murder of an 8-year-old inside Ryan International School in Gurgaon continues to send shock waves across the country, Mumbai too is no stranger to similar incidents that left parents questioning the safety provided to their children at school.

On 18 May, parents of a 4-year-old girl filed an FIR in Mumbai's MIDC police station in Andheri, alleging that their child was sexually assaulted in school by none other than the 57-year-old founder and trustee of the school. The parents also alleged a teacher’s involvement in the case.

3. Hema Upadhyay Murder: Family Claims Chintan Is Influencing Probe

One and a half years after Mumbai was left shocked over the brutal double murder of artist Hema Upadhyay and lawyer Harish Bhambani, families of the two killed have now raised their concerns about the ongoing investigation.

On 11 December 2015, after the body of the 43-year-old artist and the 65-year-old lawyer was found stuffed in cardboard boxes and dumped in a sewer in Mumbai’s suburban Kandivali, the Kandivali police took up the investigation. They soon arrested five accused in the case, including Hema’s husband artist Chintan Upadhyay. However, the families of Hema and Harish allege that since the case was handed over to the Ghatkopar crime branch in May 2016, there has been no headway in the probe.

4. Govt Law College Takes on MU

Coming out in support of its students who are in a quandary given the series of glitches that have mired the Mumbai University’s results, one of the city’s oldest and premier law colleges has decided to take on the varsity. In a letter to the University’s Director of Board of Examination and Evaluation, the college has claimed that its final-year students have been wrongly failed in Law of Evidence subject, and this threatens to disrupt their future academic and job prospects.

5. Construction of Navi Mumbai Airport Might Exceed 2019 Deadline

The Navi Mumbai airport is likely to miss its 2019 deadline.

Nearly six months after the GVK-led Mumbai International Airport Ltd won the contract to build and operate the new airport for Rs 16,000 crore, the government is yet to clear the validity of its bid.

6. Trucks, Buses Can't Park on South Mumbai Roads for Next 60 Days

In an attempt to decongest city roads, the Mumbai traffic police department, starting today, has banned heavy vehicles, and both private and school buses, from parking on the roadside.

The department has also restricted the movement of these vehicles inSouth Mumbai, fixing time limits on them.

A circular issued yesterday, states that the order will have to be followed for the next 60 days. Based on the success of the initiative, the traffic police will decide whether to take the plan forward.

The order has, however, met with stiff opposition from truck and school bus associations, who've described the new ruling as arbitrary. They've have threatened to go to court, if a logical resolution is not found.

7. ATS Cops Spent Rs 90 Lakhs Wooing Bar Dancer

Investigations by the Crime Branch have revealed that a sub-inspector, who was arrested last week, spent about Rs 90 lakh as he set about wooing a bar dancer a couple of years ago. The policeman, who was employed with the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), was arrested for allegedly cheating several people after luring them with promises of getting them flats under quotas reserved for widows and the differently abled.

Dilip Bhosale was arrested on September 8 along with two of his accomplices. Yesterday, a Crime Branch team also arrested Balchandra Chavan, a retired BMC staffer who helped Bhosale forge BMC documents. Around 11 people approached the cops last month, claiming that Bhosale had collectively cheated them of around Rs 3 crore.
