A man was assaulted in Nagapattinam on Thursday, 11 July, for posting a photo of himself eating beef at a hotel. The local police have arrested the four accused and booked them under charges of attempted murder.
24-year-old Muhammad Faizan had posted two pictures on 9 July of him eating beef soup with the caption, ‘Aayiram thaan sollu, maatu curry maatu curry dhaan’ (You can say a 1,000 things but beef curry is beef curry).
The incident occurred at Poravachery village in the Kilvelur police station limits around 7 pm on Thursday, reported The Hindu.
Police said a heated argument between the men escalated when the four assaulted Faizan with a wooden log and iron rod on his left shoulder and wrist, the report said.
Faizan has sustained cut injuries and is being treated at the Nagapattinam Government Hospital.
Police have arrested N Dinesh Kumar (28), A Ganesh Kumar (27), R Agathian (29) and M Mohankumar (28).
The relatives have now registered a complaint with the police and have demanded severe action against the attackers. They have also threatened to go on a protest if immediate action is not taken, reported PTI.
An FIR has been filed and the police have booked the men under IPC sections 153(A) promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony 307 (attempt to murder) 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 294 (B) (uttering obscene words in public place).
