Over a week after a 71-year-old nun was gangraped in Nadia in West Bengal, the West Bengal CID team has arrested two people, both Bangladeshi nationals.

Sikander Sheikh alias Salim was arrested in Mumbai, on Wednesday while Gopal Sarkar was taken into custody on Thursday in West Bengal.

According to the CID, Salim confessed during interrogation that he had been involved in the crime. He also said that Sarkar, the other accused, who was illegally staying in West Bengal since 2002, had given shelter to the perpetrators.

We are interrogating him. We will come to know who were the other partners in the crime. We can’t disclose anything more at this stage. We will produce him in the court tomorrow.

— Dilip Adak, Inspector-General, West Bengal CID

The nun was gangraped by a group of armed robbers in a convent on March 14. She was a Sister Superior at the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Nadia, West Bengal.

After the incident, the nun was admitted to a local hospital. She was later discharged and taken to an undisclosed destination.

A study of CCTV footage at the convent had shown four persons, who were allegedly involved in the crime.

The gang broke into the school and four of them raped the nun after gagging her. They also took Rs 12 lakh kept in the almirah locker before fleeing the place.

Since then, 17 people have been detained but no arrests were made till now. The Mamata Banerjee government ordered a CID probe initially but soon handed the case over to the CBI.
