The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Tall flames and thick black smoke enveloped the area. There were several vehicles that were parked around the shanties, which were gutted in the fire, as reported by India Today.

A resident of the area said that the fire broke out around 12:45 am in a corner of the slum.

Dharampal, a fire department official said that the residents were enraged as the fire tenders took time to reach Rithala.

The road to these slums has been blocked due to some pipeline work. Every resident wanted that their shanties should be saved first. This resulted in pelting of stones.
