At least five labourers were killed in a fire that engulfed a cloth godown in Uruli Devachi village in Pune in the early hours of Thursday, 9 May.

At least five fire tenders were deployed to battle the blaze, the cause of which remains unknown. The fire is under control now and the injured have been rushed to the hospital.

According to an official of Pune Police (Rural) cited by IANS, the fire was reported around 5 am, when the workers were asleep in a room above a saree shop located in the Uruli Devachi area on the outskirts of the city.

The blaze quickly spread from the shop to the room above and the workers were suffocated to death.

The police had also said earlier they were trying to verify whether there were more workers sleeping there, amid fears the toll could go up.
