The NDA government has been more aggressive than the previous UPA government on infiltration and terrorist acts, if the latest J&K police figures, which The Quint has accessed exclusively, are to be believed.
Under the NDA government, many more terrorists or people believed to be terrorists have been killed. Between January and July 2014, when the UPA government made way for the NDA government, with elections in between, two infiltrators were killed (graph below). In the six months afterward, between August and December 2014, 110 infiltrators were killed.
There has also been a corresponding increase in casualties among security forces personnel and civilians.
The data has been collected by the J&K Police and includes data from other security forces operating in the valley such as the BSF and the Indian Army.
However, even as infiltrations have reduced, the number of ceasefire violations have increased.
It’s a misconception that terrorists infiltrate under the cover of ceasefire violations because at such times, all the check points at borders are on high alert and patrolling increases. This is why, in spite of an increase in ceasefire violations this year, terrorist infiltration has come down.
Intelligence Bureau official to The Quint
As a result of the massive anti-terror operations, the number of security personnel injured and killed has also shot up over the past year.
