Two militants were killed and a jawan was injured in an encounter with security forces in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, 1 November.
"Security forces launched an operation based on credible inputs about the presence of militants in Zagoo locality of Khansahib area in the district," a police official told PTI.
He said, during the operation, the militants opened fire at the search party, prompting security forces to retaliate.
"During the exchange of fire, two militants were neutralised," the police official said.
"We had been tracking this group for some time, they were here probably to create unrest for the upcoming panchayat elections. We have recovered two-AK 47s and one pistol,” Col AK Nair, Commanding Officer, 53 RR, told ANI.
One of the militants has been identified as Mukhtar A Khan, a resident of Brass Arizal in Budgam.
Locals pelted stones at the security forces soon after the two militants were gunned down. News agency ANI’s outdoor broadcasting (OB) van was also damaged in the protest.
